OCEANSIDE FIELD, PETCHON, MEDLAND — With promotion to the UA for next season on the line, the Petchon Carp hosted the Elderwood Lakers in the second annual National Series for the NPL championship.
The Carp held first place in the NPL standings all year long and clinched National Series home field advantage in the last week of the season. As the first place team, the Carp would play the entire series at their home stadium, Oceanside Field. They also earned a 1-game lead to start the series, meaning they would need just two wins to take the National Cup, while the visiting second place team would need to win three. The Lakers snuck past the Carver Canaries, forcing and then winning a 1-game playoff to earn a berth in the championship series. This was the second straight National Series appearance for Elderwood, who lost the National Cup to the Kings last year.
Game 1 of the 1935 National Series featured an extra innings walk-off home run by presumed NPL MVP, Petchon LF Allen Hendrix. The Carp tied the game in the bottom of the 8th on a sacrifice fly, also by Hendrix. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Lakers, who took a 2-run lead in the top of the 10th on a home run by 1B Blake Mercier. Elderwood brought RHP Luis Adelabu in to close out the game. He walked two batters, setting the stage for the walk-off blast from Hendrix. The Carp took game 1, 6-5.
“I’m thrilled!” said Hendrix after the game, his uniform untucked and ragged from his teammates’ raucous celebratory mauling after the big hit. He kept his comments brief and exuberant: “We’ve got one more game to win tomorrow. Let’s go!”
Game 2 opened with a shaky first inning from Elderwood starter Paul Faucher, whose great Regular Season numbers were no help with his team backed up against the wall in a must-win game. He allowed 3 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks, and a wild pitch to give the Carp a 3-0 lead coming out of the opening frame. Petchon CF Enrico Adusa knocked in 2 more runs in the 8th, and the Carp took a 5-0 win in to complete the quick series sweep.
Carp manager Jon Gicquel spoke to the media after the win: “I’m just so happy for all of our guys. I believe we can take the big league by storm next year, but for now we are going to party. This is so, so, so sweet.”
The Petchon Carp will be promoted to the Uplantic Association for the 1936 season.

The Redwood Owls continued their run atop the UA, leading C Division by 11 games over Salvation as Week 12 began.
Coming into Week 12, the Prissley Trail Blazers hadn’t lost in 8 straight games, making them the hottest team in baseball. They still trailed the Delle Stars by 2 games in A Division as Monday’s games began.
The pennant race is nearing the home stretch and UA’s trade deadline is looming. August 28 will be the last chance for teams to make a deal.

Monday, 8/19/1935
- The Prissley Trail Blazers win streak ended at 8 games as they lost at home to the Salvation Brothers, 4-1.
- The Bears lost their 6th straight game, dropping today’s contest, 12-2, in Plains City. Reapers 3B Winston Townsend hit a HR and had 4 total RBI in the win.
- Both teams are dealing with injuries to star players after tonight’s Herders/Owls game. Redwood 2B Hunter Phillips has a back strain and is headed to the IL, expected to miss around two weeks. Herders RF Willie Eatmon left with a hamstring strain after a throw in the field, but is not expected to miss any time. The Herders beat the Owls in Redwood, 5-3.
- Spiders LF Kylian Martin went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, but was ejected in the 8th inning when he rushed the mound after being hit by a pitch by Tiny Sea RP Jorge Seanez. Both players were ejected and suspended for 4 games for their part in the fight. The Spiders beat the Metros, 4-2.
- Chargers 2B Luke Lia Puedris left today’s game with a sprained ankle. He is headed to the IL and will be out until at least the beginning of September. Taawa lost in Deerborn, 6-2.
Tuesday, 8/20/1935
- Prissley reliever Art Meyers found out today that he will miss the rest of this season and most of 1936 with a torn elbow ligament. He is scheduled for surgery tomorrow.
- Kings reliever Rafael Itaawa is headed to the IL for the rest of the season after tearing labrum in his shoulder on August 17. He expects to return to the field in 1936.
- The Chargers put up 5 runs in the 11th inning to overcome the White Sox in Deerborn, 8-3. However, Taawa starter Jim Lavine pitched in relief and left with wrist pain. X-rays were negative. Lavine is questionable for his next start. Taawa is back to 2 games behind Deerborn in D Division with the win.
- The Platte Bears lost their 7th straight, 3-2, in Plains City. They now sit at .500, 7 games back in Division D.
- Terrible news for 25-year old Metros pitcher Pedro Amador, who left today’s game with a torn elbow flexor tendon. He will miss the rest of this season and may not be able to play again until 1937. The Metros lost to the Spiders in Wight, 6-5.
- Lia Kompos SS Eek Gurr became the UA’s sixth player ever to hit for the cycle! He went 4-for-5 with a single, a double, a triple, and 2-run HR. The Miners won in Roland, 7-6.
- Trail Blazers 23-year old RHP Cisco Garcika went 8 innings with no runs allowed on just 4 hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Prissley got back to winning with a 2-0 victory over Salvation.
- Young Delle C Jason Vaughn made the most of his start tonight, stroking 5 hits and an RBI in the Stars’ 7-2 win at Northsouth.
- Legendary Rivals OF Jorge Akil’s season is likely done. He left tonight’s game against his former team, the Lia Puedris Kings, with a torn rotator cuff. The Kings won the game, 4-1.
- Redwood LF Steve Thomas brought home 7 runs, tying the Owls team record, in their 9-3 win against the Herders. Thomas was 4-for-5 with a double and a 3-run homer, his 20th of the year. Owls RHP Will Shufflebottom took his start into the 9th, with 8.1 IP and 9 Ks, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.
Wednesday, 8/21/1935
- Railey starter Pedro Rivera notched 12 Ks over 7.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 1 walk. The Rivals beat the Guardians, 7-1.
- Platte broke their 7-game losing streak with a big 12-4 win on the road in Lia Puedris. Bears RF Gurr Gurr went 3-for-4 with 2-run double.
Thursday, 8/22/1935
- Tempers boiled over in Lia Kompos when Miners CF Ogg Do charged Taawa pitcher Doyle Lane in the 2nd inning. Do has been suspended for 4 games and Lane will miss 6. Chargers CF Jesus Vazquiza drew 4 walks to tie the UA record as Taawa beat Lia Kompos, 11-6. Miners RF Jorge Aguilar hit 2 solo homers in the loss.
- Brothers starter Kamel Gosselin went the distance at the City Center, striking out 13 Owls batters with just 2 hits, 1 walk, and zero runs allowed. Final: SAL 5, RW 0.
- Kings C Sergio Salinatas hit 2 HRs for 4 RBI, but the Bears won at home in 12 innings, as LF Stan Davis hit a walk-off double. Final (12): PLA 7, LPK 6.
Friday, 8/23/1935
- All-Star reliever Jorge Seanez has been traded from the Metros to the Bears, as Platte shores up its bullpen for a playoff push in baseball’s toughest division. Seanez has a 3.13 ERA and a 3-1 record in 34 appearanes. He is currently suspended until tomorrow for his part in a fight on Monday.
- Prissley RHP Sonny Martineau went 7 innings against the Spiders in Wight. He allowed no runs on just 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Final: PRI 8, WIG 2.
- 25-year old Metros LHP Pedro Amador got the tough news that he will miss the remainder of this season and likely the majority of 1936 with a torn elbow tendon.
- Chargers ace Ali Guyon struck out 11 batters and allowed 1 run on 6 hits and 1 walk over 6 IP as Taawa won in Lia Kompos, 6-3. With Luke Lia Puedris already out, the Chargers were dealt another bad card as CF Jesus Vazquiza will likely miss time, adding a strained back muscle to the rib cage strain he was already healing from.
- Owls LF Steve Thomas hit his 21st HR, a grand slam. It was part of his 3-for-5, 5-RBI day. Redwood won at Salvation, 12-9.
- Stars starter Stanley Quinn pitched in relief and left the game against the White Sox with a herniated disc. He could miss his next start. The game was suspended due to rain in the 5th inning and will be finished tomorrow on a league-wide off day.
Sunday, 8/25/1935
- The Delle Stars have acquired 31-year old RP Juan Kutakuto from the Plains City Reapers in exchange for two prospect pitchers. Kutakuto has 39 Ks and a 2.72 ERA in 36.1 IP over 23 relief appearances this season.
- Miners starter Arnold Wiliams allowed only 1 hit over 6 scoreless innings with 8 Ks and zero walks. Lia Kompos beat Delle at home, 4-3.
- Deerborn starting pitcher Juan Rosaritoko notched 10 Ks and allowed 1 run on 3 hits and a walk over 7.1 IP. The White Sox beat the Rivals, 4-2. Deerborn now leads Taawa by 3 games in D Division, with 26 games remaining in the season.
- Metros LHP Morgan Burnett could miss up to two weeks with shoulder tendinitis. Trail Blazers CF Ignacio Duarteka will be day-to-day for the next week or so with a calf strain. The Trail Blazers stayed red hot with their 5th straight win, beating Tiny Sea 7-5. They’ve won 13 of their last 14 games and are now tied with the Stars for A Division lead.
- Stags 7-time All-Star 1B Albert Pentana hit a pair of home runs for 5 RBI as Roland won at home, 9-4 over the Brothers.
- The Bears have won their 4th straight after rebounding from a 7-game loss streak. Esteban Semenya came off the bench and went 2-for-3 with a HR for Platte as they beat Northsouth, 5-3. They are currently 3 games behind Taawa for the second Wild Card spot.
Monday, 8/26/1935
- Stars 3B Walter Abbott is the UA’s Player of the Week for Week 12. He hit an incredible .556 in 18 at-bats this week, with 2 HRs and 6 RBI. Abbott has been electric since coming to Delle in a trade from Plains City on August 2. Since landing in Delle, he has hit .471 with 11 RBI over 17 games.
