Watch the stream of part 2 of the UA SemiFinal Series!

The Deerborn White Sox and the Platte Bears met in the 1933 UA SemiFinal Series, with a chance on the line to face the defending champs, the Delle Stars, in the Windsor Cup Finals!

1933 SFS Game 1

The Bears won their third UA West pennant to earn home field advantage in the SFS.

Game 1 was a pitcher’s duel. Jorge Takato (DEE) and Craig Ogg (PLA) each went 7 innnings, but Ogg came out on top, allowing zero runs on 4 hits, and striking out 11 batters. Takato pitched very well, but gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in the 6th inning and was saddled with the loss.

1933 SFS Game 2 | PLA leads 1-0

Bears pinch-hitter Dave Phillips ignited the home crowd with a grand slam home run in the 2nd inning, but a 5-run 5th inning put the White Sox over the top, 6-4.

1B Bob Hove and rookie C Alejandro Lia Loma homered in the big 5th inning.

1933 SFS Game 3 | Series tied 1-1

The series moved to Kostinsky Park in Deerborn for Game 3.

White Sox starter Martin Westfield pitched brilliantly, striking out 10 batters and only allowing 1 run over 7+ innings. The Deerborn offense couldn’t muster any support, however. White Sox manager Jim Holt chose to leave Westfield in the game to start the 8th, and he gave up a pinch-hit home run to Platte’s Michael Moore for the only run of the game.

With the win, the Bears are one win away from their second Windsor Cup Finals appearance.

1933 SFS Game 4 | PLA leads 2-1

Another instant classic in an SFS Game 4!

The game started on a sour note, with White Sox starter Wiley Ellysian coming out of the game after just 3 pitches. His injury turned out to be a torn labrum that will take several months to heal. Reliever Michael Green entered the game after just having pitched an inning the day before. With an already decimated pitching staff and needing two wins to stave off elimination, Deerborn was reeling early.

The White Sox bullpen pitched well, and home runs by LF Juan Tumaini and 1B Bob Hove, along with an RBI single by SS Gilberto Hernankez, gave then a 3-0 lead head into the 7th inning.

In another questionable managerial move, Deerborn skipper Jim Holt put ace Jorge Takato into the game to start the 7th inning instead of saving him to start in game 5. He pitched poorly, giving up a double to Platte CF Andy Bernard and then a home run to C Eloi Rousset. Deerborn CL Carlos Garcika came on in the 8th and gave up a pinch-hit, 2-run homer to Dave Phillips (his 2nd pinch-hit home run of the series).

Having lost their lead and finding their backs against the wall with 6 outs left to save their season, Deerborn got a double from 3B Rygh Ogg, who scored on another single by Gilberto Hernankez in the 8th. With a tie game in the bottom of the 9th, Bob Hove drove a ball into the left field corner to score Juan Tumaini from first base. The White Sox stormed the field in celebration with a 5-4 walk-off victory, forcing a decisive Game 5.

1933 SFS Game 5 | Series tied 2-2

The series moved back to Platte for Game 5, with the hometown faithful hoping not to feel a repeat of last season’s Game 5 disappointment. Isaac Lee (DEE) and Craig Ogg (PLA) took the mound for their teams.

White Sox 3B Rygh Ogg started the scoring in the 2nd inning with a solo shot off of Craig Ogg, but Isaac Lee walked Platte LF Adam Sullivan with the bases loaded in the 4th to tie the game, 1-1.

Deerborn C Alejandro Lia Loma regained the lead with a solo shot in the top of the 7th, but a wide throw to third base by LF Juan Tumaini in the bottom half of the 7th scored Bears 3B Ralph Maxwell, and the game was again tied, 2-2.

White Sox RP Joao Thery left the game in the 7th with a yet-to-be-diagnosed injury to his shoulder.

After his throwing error cost his team the lead, Juan Tumaini came up against Platte CL Mike Cleveland in the top of the 8th and launched a solo blast to right field, his 2nd of the series, giving the White Sox a 3-2 lead. RPs Vist Sek and Carlos Garcika closed the game out and the White Sox began their celebration, headed to their 5th straight Windsor Cup Finals appearance with a 3-2 win in Game 5.

Deerborn SS Gilberto Hernankez is the 1933 SFS MVP. He hit .529 in the series, with 2 crucial RBI in Game 4.

The Windsor Cup Finals will feature the Deerborn White Sox and the Delle Stars for the third straight year. Can Deerborn ride their momentum from the SFS to break their three-year Finals losing streak or will Delle solidify their dynasty with a third straight Windsor Cup victory?
