Weekly Report: September 8, 1930

The Stags, Stars, and Brothers are battling atop the Wild Card race in the UA, while the Bears and White Sox have all but wrapped up their divisions and are racing for the league’s top record. As a reminder, both division champs will make the three-team playoff tournament, along with one Wild Card. The team with the UA’s top record will earn a bye to the Windsor Cup Finals.

The Carp, Canaries, Metros, and Lakers are still bunched at the top of the NPL standings as their season is now entering its final week. Unlike the UA, the NPL will not have a postseason and will crown the top team at the end of its schedule as 1930 NPL Champions.

Two frightening injuries on the same day have more people calling for head protection in professional baseball.

UA News:

9/1:

  • White Sox RHP Roberto Tokorres leaves in the 4th inning of today’s game at Delle. Team doctors say he has an abdominal strain. He is listed as day-to-day, so we will watch and see if he misses starts as the season winds down. He is expected to recover in 2-3 weeks, which makes his status for the playoffs questionable. It’s another tough break for Deerborn’s banged-up starting rotation, but the remain in a tight battle with Platte for the UA’s best record. The White Sox win against the Stars, 7-1.
  • CF Stan Davis and 3B Juan Tokorres each hit their 26th home run in Platte’s 7-4 win over Railey. They remain 2 games ahead of the White Sox for the league’s top record.

  • The Stars take the rubber match in Delle, beating the White Sox, 5-2. Stars LHP David Rogers leaves the game clutching his left arm. Rogers is a 3-time All-Star and last year’s Reliever of the Year. It could be trouble for Delle as they continue to fight for a playoff spot. Rogers awaits an official prognosis.
  • Bears RHP Julio Martinezto goes 8.2 innings and gives up just 1 run while striking out 9 in Platte’s 8-1 win over Railey. Platte sweeps Railey for their 5th win in a row. They are the first team to 60 wins. If they can win 6 of the last 15 games remaining, they will own the best Regular Season in UA history, besting Roland’s 65-win 1928 season.
  • A scary moment in the Bears’ big win today: LF Andy Bernard, one of the team’s most beloved players, lost consciousness after a collision on the base paths. He quickly regained awareness, but was removed from the game. His status moving forward in uncertain. He would certainly be missed if he ends up out for any upcoming games.
  • RHP Jose Verdier pitches 8 scoreless, 4-hit innings with 8 Ks as Roland shuts down Lia Kompos, 4-0. Stags 2B Ronald Pass is struck in the head with a pitch and leaves the game with blurred vision and nausea. He will miss tomorrow’s game against Delle as a precaution, but appears to be uninjured. The incident, along with Andy Bernard’s injury today, is renewing the call for head protection in baseball.

The injury-prone star will miss the rest of the year. He only played in 29 games this season, but hit .375 with 11 home runs, 28 runs scored, and 26 RBI.
  • Howard Tenney hits his 30th HR in the Brothers’ 6-4 win over Lia Kompos. Despite a whopping 9 players on the IL,the Brothers remain at the top of the Wild Card race.

9/7:

  • 1B Ralph August and CF John Bunce both hit homers in back-to-back games for the Herders in their 7-0 win over Roland. Cherricaw pitching combines for 10 Ks and allows just 3 hits in a bullpen game. The loss drops Roland 1 game back of Salvation for the Wild Card.
