Uplantic Bowl III

Taawa Jackals vs Tiny Sea Titans

Tiny Sea Coliseum, Tiny Sea, Harmony

January 6, 1935

TS (12-4) vs TAA (13-2):

The nation kicked off the New Year with Uplantic Bowl III at Tiny Sea Coliseum. The Tiny Sea Titans took on the Taawa Jackals for the UPF Championship and the Pennington Cup! Although Tiny Sea Coliseum is the Titans’ home field, they were designated as the visiting team for the game, since the Jackals had the better record in the Regular Season and the Uplantic Bowl is considered a neutral field.

The Titans won the NC West. They hosted the Archers in the Wild Card round, winning 39-36 after holding off a late comeback. They then visited the Travelers in the NC Championship, where they dominated with a 19-point win to advance to their first Uplantic Bowl appearance. The Titans will by playing for their first Pennington Cup, a trophy named for the team’s founder, Catherine Pennington.

The Jackals are the defending Uplantic Bowl champions. They played to the league’s best Regular Season record at 12-2. This earned them a bye to the SC Championship game, where they stomped the Chaparrals by a 31-point margin. The Jackals went to their second straight Uplantic Bowl, hoping to become the first team to win the Pennington Cup for the second time.

The Uplantic Bowl started slow, in contrast to both teams’ blowout wins the previous week. The teams exchanged field goals in the first quarter, then the Titans pulled away slightly in the second, with a 48-yard FG from K Terry Turpin and 4-yard TD pass from QB Leland James to WR Gerald Gomes. Jackals SS Mark Lusk intercepted a pass from Leland James with just under 4 minutes remaining in the half. Taawa turned the turnover into a 49-yard FG by K Kermit Butler to make it a 13-6 game at halftime.

Tiny Sea added another TD in the third quarter on a 7-yard run by HB Anthony Kamzee to take a 20-6 lead.

The Jackals had the highest scoring offense in the league this season, but the Tiny Sea defense kept them in check. Presumptive league MVP QB James De La Cruz struggled for Taawa, throwing 3 interceptions in the game. WR Jeremy Merkado also turned the ball over on a fumble in the third quarter.

Late in the game, the Jackals were finally able to get their running game somewhat energized. HB Dale Moulin scored on a 10-yard run with 4:20 to go in the game, then De La Cruz connected with HB Rickie Bates on a 49-yard TD pas to tie the game with 1:15 to go. The Titans were able to move into range for a long FG attempt, but Terry Turpin’s kick missed wide to the left and the Uplantic Bowl headed to overtime for the first time.

Taawa won the coin toss and started overtime with the ball at the Titans 35 yard line. The Jackals converted a first down, but then on 3rd and 11, James De La Cruz thew a careless pass that was picked off by SS Dario Wilson, setting the Titans up to win the game with a field goal. They did just that, as Terry Turpin made up for his fourth quarter miss with a 49-yard FG to win Uplantic Bowl III.

The Titans won their first Pennington Cup, standing up to a Taawa team that many thought was a shoe-in for the championship.

Titans HB Anthony Kamzee was named Uplantic Bowl III MVP. Kamzee rushed for 88 yards and a TD on 21 carries and had 8 catches for 50 yards.

In the week leading up to the game, the UPF Commissioner’s office announced that future iterations of the Uplantic Bowl would be hosted at the home stadium of the previous season’s winner, meaning that Uplantic Bowl IV will be back at Tiny Sea Coliseum next year.

Congratulations to the Tiny Sea Titans, Uplantic Bowl III Champions!

Final: TS 23, TAA 20 (OT).
