The UPF season continued with big games in Week 9. Coming off of their first loss of the year last week, Delle faced a tough test against Lia Kompos. Elderwood and Salvation played for first place in the NC West. Deerborn and Wight faced off in a NC East division showdown.

Week 9 Scoreboard:

DEL (7-1) @ LK (5-3): After a heartbreaking loss to the Ravens last week that ended their unbeaten streak, the Delle Chaparrals headed to Lia Kompos to take on a tough Pumas team. In a tight game, Delle QB Hubert Aguirre had 389 passing yards and 4 TDs, but threw 2 INTs to Lia Kompos CB D’Alohaauiaoe Davilaka that the Pumas turned into 10 points. Penalties also hurt the Chaparrals, along with a missed FG by K Ralph McLemore on a “gimme” 24-yard kick with 7 seconds left in the game. The Pumas held on for a wild victory and handed the Chaps their 2nd straight loss after they started the season 7-0. Final: LK 30, DEL 28.

AMB (3-5) @ PET (1-7): In what has been dubbed the “Nap Bowl,” the Amblint Poets visited the Petchon Predators in possibly the most boring professional football game of all time. Both teams managed under 300 yards total offense and only a single FG was scored during the game. The Poets got the win. Amblint LB Johnny Kaldron had 2 sacks on 10 total tackles. Final: AMB 3, PET 0.

NOR (1-7) @ PC (5-3): The Plains City Travelers looked to keep the top spot in a crowded NC East division as they hosted the Northsouth Generals. This game was all Travelers. Plains City led 20-0 at halftime and cruised to victory. Travelers HB David Samaniega racked up a staggering 204 rushing yards and a TD on 30 carries. QB Phillip Marinna’a passed for 255 yards, 3 TDs, and zero INTs. TE Kylian Vandiver caught 7 passes for 107 yards and a TD. The Plains City defense held the Generals to just 186 yards of total offense compared to the Travelers’ 483 yards. Plains City remains atop the NC East after the rout. Final: PC 35, NOR 14.

CAR (3-5) @ PLA (4-4): Two teams striving to stay in the playoff conversation met at the Simmons Bowl as the Platte Cragsmen hosted the Carver Bulldogs. The Bulldogs led briefly in the fourth quarter, but the Cragsmen took advantage of an interception, a fumble recovery, and a missed FG in the final 5 minutes to win the game. Platte gains a game on the Chaparrals with the win. They are 2 games behind in the SC East and 2 games behind the Pumas in the Wild Card race. The Bulldogs remain in last place, 3 games behind the Travelers in the NC East. Final: PLA 19, CAR 10.

TAA (7-1) @ RW (2-6): The mighty Taawa Jackals visited the Redwood Flyers. Bad news early for the Jackals as MVP candidate QB James De La Cruz left the game on the fourth play from scrimmage with a sprained ankle. Recovery time is expected to be relatively short; De La Cruz will likely be back on the field in 2-3 weeks. Backup QB William Martinez struggled with accuracy and threw an INT, but held the team together for a win against a struggling Redwood team. Jackals HB Rickie Bates was the game’s star, rushing for a TD and 101 yards on 23 touches, and picking up 30 receiving yards on 3 catches. With the victory, Taawa takes over the league’s best record. The Jackals will have to rely on Martinez in next Week’s face-off with the Delle Chaparrals. Final: TAA 19, RW 14.

ELD (6-2) @ SAL (5-3): The Salvation Brothers hosted the Elderwood Archers in a big division match-up. With a win, Salvation could own a share of first place, while a win for the Archers would keep them alone atop the NC West. The Brothers jump ahead with a big second quarter to lead by 12 points at halftime, but the Archers wore Salvation down and held on for a narrow road win. The Brothers were without starting QB William Maya, who is recovering from a bruised rib. Backup QB Kim Calhoun threw 2 costly INTs, including one late in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach. The Archers hold on to sole possession of first place, while the Brothers fall to third. Final: ELD 26, SAL 22.

GR (2-6) @ TS (5-3): The Tiny Sea Titans played host to the Green Rock Warriors. The Titans hoped to keep pace with the Archers and Brothers in the NC West. Titans QB Leland James was 21 for 25 for 245 yards, 2 TDs, and zero INTs. He also ran for 26 yards as Tiny Sea cruised to a win. WRs Gerald Gomez and Joseph Terwaa had good games, with 71 and 66 receiving yards respectively and a TD each. Tiny Sea is in second place in the NC West, a game behind the Archers. If the playoffs started today, they would be the NC Wild Card team. Final: TS 30, GR 20.

DEE (4-4) @ WIG (4-4): The Deerborn Gryphons met the Ravens and Jenkins Stadium in Wight. The Ravens were riding the momentum of having ended the Chaparrals unbeaten streak in Week 8, while the Gryphons had lost three straight close games. Both teams needed a win to keep pace with the Travelers in the NC East. The Gryphons struggled early, but overcame a 9-point deficit in the fourth quarter, squeaking out a win on a 53-yard FG by K John Luna. Luna had struggled with two missed kicks earlier in the game. Both QBs played well. Alphonso Esparkia threw for 301 yards and a TD for Wight, while Branden Warren had 321 passing yards and a TD for Deerborn. Gryphons WR Dewitt Kessler racked up 113 receiving yards and a TD. The Gryphons are now alone in second place, while the Ravens fall to third. Final: DEE 17, WIG 16.
