As we kick off the second half of the season, the Delle Chaparrals look to remain the only unbeaten team in the UPF, while Northern Conference division races are very much up for grabs.

Week 8 Scoreboard:

DEE (4-3) @ AMB (2-5): The Amblint Poets hosted the Deerborn Gryphons. The Gryphons looked very strong in the opening weeks of the season, but have seemed to cool recently. In a ho-hum affair with just 9 points and no TDs between both teams, the Poets edged the Gryphons to hand them their third straight loss. The Poets sacked Deerborn QB Branden Warren 7 times in the game. Amblint SS Kevin Lawson had a 6 tackles, a sack, and an INT. Deerborn falls to second place with the loss. Final: AMB 6, DEE 3.

PC (4-3) @ CAR (3-4): The Carver Bulldogs visited the Plains City Travelers. After an 0-4 start, Plains City put together a 3-game win streak and had a path to a share of first place with a win this week. The Travelers jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs got within a TD to start the fourth quarter, but the Travelers held them off for the win. Plains City HB David Samaniega ran for 98 yards on 23 carries and made 4 catches for 60 yards and a TD. The win puts Plains City alone at the top of the NC East. Final: PC 23, CAR 13.

WIG (3-4) @ DEL (7-0): The Delle Chaparrals looked to remain the league’s only unbeaten team as they hosted the Wight Ravens, who are fighting to stay alive in the competitive NC East. In a back-and-forth game, Wight took the lead on a TD pass from QB Alphonso Esparkia to HB Garry Young with 16 seconds to go. Young ran for 88 yards on 23 carries and a TD and caught 6 passes for 43 yards and a TD. Delle QB Hubert Aguirre had a very good game with 230 yards passing on 21-for-27, 2 TDs, and no INTs, but a tenacious effort by the Ravens gave the Chaparrals their first loss of the year. Delle still leads the SC East, while the Wight is tied for second in the NC East. Final: WIG 24, DEL 23.

NOR (1-6) @ ELD (5-2): The first-place Elderwood Archers looked strong at home against the Northsouth Generals. The Archers kept the Generals out of the endzone, but led by just one point going into the fourth quarter. A touchdown run by HB Mark Muinos to extend Elderwood’s lead capped off a 117-yard day. Muinos also had 3 catches for 45 yards. Archers FS K’Tueti Outlaw intercepted a pass by Generals QB Quincy Medina with 1:53 left to seal the win and keep Elderwood atop the NC West division. Final: ELD 17, NOR 9.

RW (1-6) @ PC (2-5): Two basement dwellers in the SC West battled for pride in Green Rock as the Warriors hosted the Redwood Flyers. LB Tarek Blackwell had 5 tackles, a sack, and recovered a fumble to help the Flyers beat the Warriors. Both teams are 2-6 and unlikely to make the playoffs this year. Final: RW 20, GR 10.

LK (4-3) @ PLA (4-3): The Lia Kompos Pumas played the Platte Cragsmen at the Simmons Bowl. The Pumas have suffered a few tough, close losses this season, including a somewhat embarrassing loss to the last-place Warriors last week in Lia Kompos. Pumas HB Leonard Bryant ran for 81 yards and a TD and had a 19-yard catch today as Lia Kompos outlasted Platte to keep pace with the Jackals in the SC West. Final: LK 20, PLA 13.

TS (4-3) @ SAL (5-2): Crosstown division rivals met at the City Center in a prime time showdown as the Salvation Brothers hosted the Tiny Sea Titans. QB Leland James struggled a bit in the passing game, throwing a TD and 2 INTs on just 121 yards, but he ran 10 times for 67 yards to lead the team. Both QBs left the game with injuries, but James was able to quickly return, while Brothers QB William Maya suffered a bruised rib and could not finish the game. He will likely miss another week. The Titans held the Brothers to 74 rushing yards to hold on for the win in a close game. Both teams are now tied for second place, behind the Archers in the NC West. Final: TS 20, SAL 13.

PET (1-6) @ TAA (6-1): The haves and have-nots met in Taawa as the first-place Jackals hosted the struggling Petchon Predators at Sapfoot Stadium West. As predicted, the Jackals handily defeated the Predators. Taawa QB James De La Cruz added another page to his bid for MVP with 292 yards and 4 TDs on a 24-for-28 day. Petchon HB Vernon Landon ran for 103 yards, but the game belonged to the Jackals from start to finish with the Taawa defense holding the Predators to just 3 points. The Jackals remain two games ahead of the Pumas in the SC West. Final: TAA 28, PET 3.
