The seventh season of the Uplantic Association of Professional Baseball Clubs concluded this week with the 1934 Windsor Cup Finals. The #1 seed Delle Stars took on the #5 Tiny Sea Metros in a best-of-seven series for the highest prize in baseball, the Windsor Cup.

The Stars played for their unprecedented fourth straight Windsor Cup title while the Metros made their first appearance in the Finals in their first season in the league.

Delle won their second straight Davis Trophy for best UA Regular Season record after another dominant season. They got a bye to the SemiFinal Series, where they beat the Bears, three games to one to advance to the Windsor Cup Finals for the fourth straight season, having won the Cup in each of the previous three. The Stars are the only team to ever win the Windsor Cup more than once.

Tiny Sea was a new addition to the UA this year. They were one of four teams added to the UA from the NPL as part of the UUBO merger. The Metros claimed the top Wild Card seed after surging in the final weeks of the Regular Season and finishing just one game behind the Herders for the C Division pennant. They beat those same Herders, two games to none, in the Wild Card round, then pulled off a reverse sweep against the #2 Redwood Owls to reach the Windsor Cup Finals.

Would the Delle Stars continue to dominate baseball for their fourth straight Cup, or would the upstart Tiny Sea Metros pull off the impossible and lift the Cup in their first UA season?

UA News

Sunday, 10/7/1934

  • Delle starter Jeff Rogers, last season’s WCF MVP, fell apart in the 7th inning as the Metros came from behind to take Game 1 and an unlikely 1-0 lead in the series. The Stars defense had 2 errors in the 3-run Metros 7th.

Monday, 10/8/1934

  • The Stars got started early with a 3-run 1st inning and never looked back in Game 2. The crowd of 31,423 was raucous for the entirety of the game’s 9 innings. Delle RH SP Pat Carter allowed 1 run on 5 hits with 6 Ks and 3 walks over 6.1 innings to get the win as the Stars tied the series at a game apiece.

Tuesday, 10/9/1934

  • Platte Bears 38-year old star LF Stan Davis signed a 1-year extension for a $6.8 million payday. Davis has spent his six-year career with the Bears, helping them win the Windsor Cup in 1930 and appearing in two All-Star Games.

Wednesday, 10/10/1934

  • Both lefty starters pitched well in Game 3. Delle SP Morgan Burnett has had a career year in his first year with the Stars. He allowed 1 run on 4 hits over 6 IP. Jeff Walker is also in his first year with Tiny Sea. Walker kept pace with Burnett and the Stars until the 7th, when Delle got HRs from 3B Roy Evans and PH Steve Sheffield to take a lead. Delle went on to win, 5-2, taking a 2 game to 1 lead in the series.

Thursday, 10/11/1934

  • Stars SS Mario Olivo went deep twice for 3 RBI and RF Tony Katakien hit a HR as part of a 3-for-5, 3 RBI day. Delle unloaded for 7 runs over the final 2 innings to take Game 4, 11-6. The Stars have won 3 straight and are 1 win away from their fourth straight Windsor Cup championship as the series shifts back to Delle for Game 5.

Saturday, 10/13/1934

  • Stars SS Mario Olivo hit a HR and had 4 total RBI while LF Antonio Teakowa had a 2-run HR. RF Tony Katakien was 2 for 3 with an RBI. SP Jeff Rogers gave up 4 runs on 7 hits over 7 innings, but the Delle offense overpowered the Tiny Sea pitching staff to take an 8-4 win and win their fourth straight Windsor Cup, at home in Stars Ballpark of Darling.

Stars RF Tony Katakien won the 1934 WCF Most Valuable Player award. Katakien came to the team as part of a late August trade with the Roland Stags. He performed well as the new right field starter in Delle. In the Windsor Cup Finals, Katakien was on fire. He hit .455 with a home run and 5 RBI.
