KINGS STADIUM, LIA PUEDRIS, THRONSON — The Lia Puedris Kings hosted the Elderwood Lakers this week in the inaugural NPL National Series. The series was played between the top two Regular Season finishers in the NPL, with the winner earning promotion to the Uplantic Association for the 1935 season.
This series looked a little different from playoff series we’ve seen before in Uplantic professional baseball. As the top Regular Season team, the Kings earned a 1-game lead going in to Game 1of the Best-of-5 series. Lia Puedris also hosted the entire series in their home stadium.
Game 1 of the National Series saw an incredible performance by Lia Puedris starter Ben Anderson. The 24-year old lefty took a perfect game into the 7th inning before finally issuing a walk. Anderson ended up going 8+ innings, allowing zero hits and striking out 14 batters.
After the game, Anderson said: “I wanted to finish [the no hitter], but I just didn’t have it anymore in the 9th. This is the championship, so of course I didn’t want to jeopardize the game. But, yeah, I wanted it pretty bad.”
The Kings beat the Lakers in Game 1, 5-2, to take a 2-0 series lead.
With their backs against the wall, Elderwood fought hard to keep their season alive with a 10-inning win. Lakers 1B Blake Mercier brought SS Ignacio Mapemba home with a single in the 8th to tie the game at 1 run apiece. In the top of the 10th, a solo home run by LF Len Bryn gave Elderwood the lead, then RBI hits from PH Gus Moore and RF Mike Garrison put the Kings on ice and gave the Lakers a 4-1 win. Lia Puedris starter Vic Mitchell was brilliant, striking out 12 over 7.1 scoreless innings, but Elderwood was able to take advantage of the bullpen for the crucial victory.
Game 3 was another must-win for Elderwood. They led the game 1-0 until the bottom of the 7th inning, when Lia Puedris RF Quincy Henson rapped a 2-run double to give the Kings the lead.
Kings starter Greg Crepin went 7 innings and allowed 1 run on 2 hits with 5 Ks. Relievers Robinson Lia Idris and Jason Reilly held on to give Lia Puedris the 2-1 win and and wrap up the series, 3 games to 1.
The Lia Puedris Kings will go down in history as winners of the first-ever National Series. They will take home the National Cup and be promoted to the Uplantic Association next year. Congratulations!
