CITY CENTER, TINY SEA, HARMONY — For the second straight season, Mario Olivo of the Delle Stars is the UA All-Star MVP. He is now a 4-time All-Star and has won the UA league MVP award in 1931, ’32, and ’33, not to mention a Windsor Cup Finals MVP in 1931 and Windsor Cup championships for the Stars in the last three seasons.

For the 7th All-Star Game, the Uplantic Association returned to the City Center in Tiny Sea, site of the inaugural All-Star contest in 1928. With changes to league alignment this season, the East vs. West All-Star dynamic is no more. Instead, players from A and B Divisions made up the Team 1 All-Stars, with players from C and D Divisions comprising the Team 2 All-Stars.

Mario Olivo went 4 for 6, with a crucial moment coming in the top of the 8th to tie the game with a 2-run double off of Northsouth closer Peter Hernankez. Team 1 went on to score 4 off of Salvation RHP Donald O’Quinn in the top of the 9th, thanks to a 3-run double from Rivals OF Gary Holland and a 1-run double from Wight 1B Ryad Renaud.

As was the case in 1931 and 1933, UA officials considered declaring a draw as the game entered the 9th inning with a tie score. Thankfully, the big 4-run 9th from Team 1 led to a 10-6 win and absolved league brass from what would surely have been a controversial decision. However, the new league format has many fans and journalists calling for a reexamination or even cancellation of future All-Star festivities. “Team 1 versus Team 2 just doesn’t have the allure of East/West,” said former Chargers owner Jorge Olufemi. “A lot of owners would rather scrap the whole thing than risk player health for an exhibition game that’s waning in popularity anyway.”

We received no word from UA commissioner Jim Windsor’s office on the All-Star Game’s fate beyond 1935, but Craterview Park in Platte has been confirmed as the site of next year’s match. All-Star Game MVP Mario Olivo did not comment on the game’s future, but did say this: “Playing in the All-Star game is near the top of my career highlights, personally, and when I look out at the fans in the stands, I feel a deep connection. We love the game of baseball!”
