1934 Uplantic Baseball: Week 9

August 6, 1934

3-Time MVP Mario Olivo of the Delle Stars is making his case for another MVP award in 1934. This week, he earned Player of the Week with a .550 average, 3 HR, 6 RBI, and 7 runs scored. Olivo currently leads the UA in batting average (.370) and RBI (55). He trails teammate Antonio Teakowa (22 HR) for the UA home run lead with 20 HR.

The UA is a few days out from its All-Star Game in Tiny Sea City, and division leaders Delle, Deerborn, Cherricaw, and Redwood are still in command and competing for the league’s top record.

Trimble Toppers RHP Tim Farmer pitched the second no-hitter in NPL history this week against the Blue Sox at Lia Puedris Coliseum!

The baseball world saw a flurry of trades this week as top teams began to position for runs at the playoffs and struggling teams looked to build for the future. Friday was the NPL trade deadline. The UA trade deadline is coming up on August 28.

With just 12 games remaining in the NPL season, the Kings remain in the top spot, with the Lakers just a game behind. The National Cup between the top two NPL teams begins August 19, with promotion to the UA on the line.

All-Star voting continues! Fans across Uplantica have been voting for their favorite players. The winners will play in the 7th UA All-Star Game, coming up on August 10 at the Salvation City Center in Tiny Sea City.

Monday, 7/30/1934

  • The Miners made a deal today to send LH RP Javier Rosaritoko to the White Sox in exchange for young prospects Fares Rousset and Todd James.
  • Stags 2B Albert Pentana may miss some time over the next week with back tightness. Carver beat Roland today, 3-2.
  • Metros LH SP Jeff Walker went 7 innings with 1 ER on 3 hits and struck out 11. Tiny Sea beat Delle, 3-1.
  • White Sox RH SP Jorge Takato allowed 1 run on just 2 hits over 7 IP, striking out 6. Rivals LH SP Howard Ferguson went 8 innings and allowed 1 run on 4 hits with 9 Ks. Neither pitcher got the decision, as Deerborn came out on top after a 14-inning affair, 4-1. Rivals LF Julio Kastro drew 4 walks in the loss.

Tuesday, 7/31/1934

  • The Metros made a deal with the NPL’s Ducks to bring C Yoni Beaulieu to Tiny Sea. The Ducks received OF prospects Kilian Lefevre and Jack Richard.
  • Veteran LH RP Allen Thompson is headed to the Stars. The Wight Spiders dealt the reliever to Delle in exchange for LF Jose Najera and two young prospects.
  • Platte SS Abel Parisot went 3 for 5 with a grand slam as the Bears beat the Trail Blazers, 12-4.
  • Delle RH RP Tony Rodier will be out for 2-3 weeks with shoulder inflammation. The Stars held on for a 3-2 win over the Metros in 14 innings.
  • Plains City SS Winston Townsend hit a triple and a 3-run HR in the Reapers’ 6-2 win over Wight. Reapers 1B Anthony wise fractured his foot and will miss about a month of action.
  • Lia Kompos 1B Ed DeMent suffered a hyperextended knee today in the Miners’ 3-2 win over the Herders. DeMent will be day-to-day over the next week or so.
  • Owls 2B Hunter Phillips was 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, and 3 RBI as Redwood downed Taawa, 12-4. Owls LF Steve Thomas went 3 for 5 with a double and a HR in the win.

Wednesday, 8/1/1934

  • Bob Hove is July’s UA Batter of the Month! The 29-year old Prissley OF hit .333 in July, with 15 HR, 29 RBI, and 27 runs scored.
  • Reapers RH SP Achille Roy is July’s UA Pitcher of the Month. He finished the month of July with a 5-1 record and a 1.01 ERA.
  • The Stags walked off the first game of a doubleheader with the Canaries as CF Augusto Lia Taawa crushed a grand slam in the bottom of the 11th. In the second game, Roland beat Carver 6-0 while LHP Manuel Andwele mowed down 11 batters and allowed just 1 hit over 5.1 IP in a spot start.
  • White Sox LH SP Wiley Ellysian earned a complete game shutout with 9 Ks and 6 hits and a walk allowed. Final: DEE 5, RAI 0.
  • Bears LH SP Craig Ogg struck out 10 batters over 7.1 1-run innings as Platte beat Prissley, 3-1.
  • Owls RH SP David Merlet allowed only 1 hit over 8 scoreless innings and struck out 8 batters. Redwood blanked Taawa, 6-0.

Thursday, 8/2/1934

  • Railey 1B Mourad Garnier went deep twice in the Rivals’ 8-7 win over the Miners.
  • Spiders SS Francisco Garza went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles for 3 RBI as Wight topped Northsouth, 12-8.
  • Young Deerborn righty Juan Kwacha pitched a complete game against the Reapers. He allowed 1 ER on 5 hits with 1 walk. He struck out 11. Final: DEE 5, PC 1.
  • Owls RH SP Evan Francis took a no-hitter into the 8th inning, but ended up with a no-decision as the Bears rallied to win, 3-2, on a walk-off HR by 1B Gabriel Martinezto. Martinezto has been rumored to be on the trade block for Platte. Bears starter Jose Verdier left after the 1st inning with a finger blister.
  • Stars SS Mario Olivo went 3 for 4 with a double and a triple and LF Antonio Teakowa hit his league-leading 22nd HR. Delle beat Roland, 6-3.

Friday 8/3/1934

  • The Herders added 31-year old RHP Raul Imamu to their bullpen as they prepare for a pennant run. They sent 22-year old lefty Bobby Herald to the Canaries in exchange.
  • The Owls sent 2B Claudio Hernankez and a pair of prospects to the Miners in exchange for RH RP Alonso Rokodriguez.
  • As the Brothers prepare for their playoff run, they have added LHP Ismael Rojatas to their bullpen. Rojatas has a 1.69 ERA and 11 Ks in 10 IP this year. The Brothers sent prospects Adam Shmitt and Gus Miguel to the Reapers in the trade.
  • The Stars picked up LH RP David Isa from the Reapers in exchange for two young prospects.
  • Having a career season with Gandolire in the NPL, OF Joe White has been traded to the Redwood Owls. The Ducks received two prospects in the trade.
  • Wight LF Francisco Katakowa hit 2 HR for 4 RBI in the Spiders’ 5-4 win over Northsouth.
  • Plains City LH SP pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 8. The Reapers ended a 7-game White Sox win streak with a 1-0 win in Deerborn.
  • Rivals LF Julio Kastro went 3 for 4 with a triple and a HR for 4 RBI. Railey beat Lia Kompos, 16-3.
  • Brothers RH SP Tom Lia Morro set a Salvation team record with 14 strikeouts. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits over 8 IP. Salvation beat Taawa, 6-1.
  • Stars SS Mario Olivo had an amazing day at the plate, crushing 3 HRs, including a bottom-of-the-9th blast to send the game to extra innings and a walk-off shot in the 14th. He went 4 for 5 with 5 RBI in Delle’s 7-5 win over Roland. Olivo has 20 HR this season.

Saturday 8/4/1934

  • Rivals C Pedro Romanota hit a pair of HR for 4 RBI in a 3-for-5 day. Railey beat Lia Kompos, 7-3.
  • Legendary Deerborn starter Jorge Takato had a great outing in the White Sox’ 4-1 win against the Reapers. Over 8 innings, he allowed 1 run on only 2 hits and walked 1 while striking out 7.
  • 23-year old LH SP Bobby Herald was great in his Canaries debut, striking out 11 and allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 4 walks over 6 IP. Carver went on to lose to Prissley, 5-3.

Sunday 8/5/1934

  • 3-time UA Reliever of the Year David Rogers signed a 3-year extension with the Plains City Reapers. The lefty closer will earn $36.3 million through 1937.

Tuesday, 7/31/1934

  • The Metros made a deal with the NPL’s Ducks to bring C Yoni Beaulieu to Tiny Sea. The Ducks received OF prospects Kilian Lefevre and Jack Richard.
  • Lakers CF Tim Moore hit 2 HR for 3 RBI and crossed the plate 3 times in Elderwood’s 7-3 win against Kontekia.
  • Riverside LHP Gianni Carter notched 10 Ks and allowed 2 hits over 6 scoreless innings. The Captains stomped the Dragons, 12-0.

Wednesday, 8/1/1934

  • Farport LF Norm Hester is the NPL Batter of the Month for July! He had a .413 average during the month with 4 HR and 17 RBI.
  • Elderwood has another NPL Pitcher of the Month in July. RH SP Paul Faucher won the award with a 6-1 record and a 2.05 ERA. He struck out 42 over 44 IP and held hitters to a .220 average.
  • Lakers RH SP Paul Stewart threw a 5-hit shutout with 6 Ks in Kontekia to beat the Mystics, 4-0.
  • Trimble RH SP Tim Farmer has thrown a no-hitter! Farmer’s hitless gem is the second no-hitter in NPL history. He struck out 8 batters and issued 3 walks on 104 pitches. The Toppers beat the Blue Sox, 1-0.

Friday 8/3/1934

  • Having a career season with Gandolire in the NPL, OF Joe White has been traded to the Redwood Owls. The Ducks received two prospects in the trade.
  • August 3rd marks the trade deadline in the NPL.
  • Mystics 3B BJ Horton went 3 for 4 with 6 RBI. Kontekia beat the Blue Sox, 9-7.
  • Gallstone RH SP Moise Thibault turned in a 2-hit performance over 7.2 scoreless innings. However, the bullpen didn’t hold up, and the Ropers lost to the Captains, 4-1.
  • Trimble LH SP Elliott Gaillard struck out 7 and allowed just 2 hits over 7 scoreless innings, but the Carp beat the Toppers, 2-0.

Saturday 8/4/1934

  • Lakers RH SP Paul Faucher earned win number 10, breaking the NPL record for wins previously held by Carp starter Josh Konzlaez. He allowed 4 hits over 7 scoreless innings and struck out 10 in today’s win. Faucher was July’s Pitcher of the Month. He has a 1.92 ERA this season with 85 Ks in 84.1 IP.
  • Tillers 3B Lou Fortin went 3 for 4 with a double and a HR for 4 RBI. The Greys beat the Ducks, 7-4.
  • Kings RH SP Vic Mitchell gave up just 2 hits over 7.2 scoreless innings and earned the win as Lia Puedris beat Green Rock, 3-0.
