1934 Uplantic Baseball: Week 1

June 11, 1934

37-year old Cherricaw 1B Pedro Kopano dominated at the plate to open the season with a .414 average, and an incredible 18 RBI and 7 HRs, including two 3-HR games. His new team is off to a 6-1 start!

The 1934 Uplantic baseball season is here! The historic first season under the UUBO merger has begun. After the busiest offseason in pro baseball history, the landscape looks a bit different with new faces in new places and four new teams having moved up to the UA from the NPL. For the first time, the UA and NPL seasons began on the same day!

The first week of the season was a wild one. Some surprising teams are off to hot starts, while some perennial contenders are struggling. But it’s a long season and there’s a whole lot of baseball left to be played!

UA News

Monday, 6/4/1934

  • The defending champion Delle Stars started their season with a solid 7-3 win over the Wight Spiders at Stars Ballpark. OF Antonio Teakowa led the way for the Stars with a 2-run HR as part of a 3-for-4 day.
  • Reapers RF Jose Gomez had a 3-run HR and 5 total RBI, while 1B Antonin Legrand walked it off in the 9th with a 2-run blast. Plains City won their UA debut, beating Northsouth in a thriller, 8-6.
  • Taawa SP Mark Lia Yorino struck out 8, and Railey SP Pedro Rivera struck out 7, but the game would take 15 innings, finally wrapping up at 11:39 pm local time. The Chargers took the marathon game over the Rivals, 3-2.
  • Deerborn ace starter Jorge Takato struck out 8 batters over 8 innings. The White Sox beat the Canaries in Deerborn, 3-1.
  • Platte LF Stan Davis launched 2 HR in a 3-for-5, 4 RBI day. The Bears beat the Miners in Lia Kompos, 6-2.
  • Owls SS Fouad Lefevre went 4-for-5 a HR, a double, and 4 total RBI. Redwood stomped Roland, 13-3.

Tuesday, 6/5/1934

  • Rivals All-Star SP Sonny Hernankez struck out 8 while holding the Chargers scoreless on just 3 hits over 7 innings. Railey beat Taawa, 4-0.
  • Reapers 1B Antonin Legrand hit a pinch-hit HR to score 3 runs as Plains City completed a 2-game sweep of Northsouth with a 7-4 win at home.
  • Brothers 1B Ric Garcika went deep twice as part of a 3-for-5, 6 RBI day. Salvation beat Cherricaw, 12-6.
  • 37-year old SP Jose Verdier made his Bears debut, striking out 10 batters over 8 innings of work. C Eloi Rousset hit a grand slam in the first inning and had 5 RBI in the game. The Bear swept the Miners in a 2-game series with a 10-4 win at Kompos Hill Stadium.
  • Delle OF Antonio Teakowa stayed hot with a 2-HR day. He walked off in the bottom of the 13th with a solo shot to beat the Spiders, 6-5, completing a 2-game sweep to start the season.
  • Owls CF Bruce Willard hit a pair of home runs for 4 RBI as Redwood rode 8 2-run innings from SP Will Shufflebottom to take 9-2 win and a series sweep.

Wednesday, 6/6/1934

  • Carver SP John Munson struck out 9 over 7 1-run innings, but the Miners blanked the Canaries, 4-0.
  • 1B Pedro Kopano hit 3 HR and recorded 9 total RBI as the Cherricaw Herders unloaded on offense with 21 runs against the Spiders in a 21-4 win in Wight. Herders P Joseph Bushe hit a grand slam in the fifth.
  • Reapers LF Andy Thompson hit two homers as Plains City beat Taawa at Sapfoot Stadium, 5-3.
  • Bears SP Craig Ogg struck out 8 and allowed 2 runs over 8 innings as Platte beat Tiny Sea, 4-2.
  • White Sox starter Mathew Huertata allowed 2 runs over 7.1 innings and racked up 9 Ks. Deerborn held on for a 3-2 win at Delle.

Thursday, 6/7/1934

  • Salvation SP Kamel Gosselin allowed only 3 hits and zero runs over 7.1 innings as the Brothers edged the Rivals, 1-0.
  • Spiders LF Andy Bernard went 4 for 6 and tied the UA record for doubles with 3 in the game. However, the Herders scored 2 to tie it in the 9th and then 2 more to win it in the 12th, 4-2.
  • Reapers 2B Felipe Tolduoso left the yard twice and notched 3 RBI as Plains City stayed unbeaten with a 7-4 win in 11 innings over the Chargers in Taawa.
  • 38-year old Guardians starter James Beach left the game against the Owls after just 1 inning with what turned out to be a herniated disc. He will go on the 10-day IL, but will likely miss around 5 weeks. Redwood starter Andres Sajjabi struck out 8 over 7.1 innings and allowed 1 run as the Owls beat the Guardians, 2-1.
  • Stars SS Mario Olivo went 4 for 6 with a solo HR as Delle beat Deerborn in 14 innings, 4-3.

Friday 6/8/1934

  • Miners new 1B Ed DeMent left Friday’s game with a sprained ankle. He is likely to miss around 5 weeks. It’s a tough blow for Lia Kompos, but they went on to beat Carver, 7-3.
  • Stags 3B Patrick Tokorres went 4 for 6 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI as the Stags rallied to win in 12 innings in Prissley, 9-7. Roland All-Star C Steve Austin left with an apparent back injury.
  • Herders 1B Pedro Kopano went off again for 3 HR in one game! He went 4 for 5 on the day with 5 RBI. Wight C Roy Brown hit 2 HR in the game, but Cherricaw came out on top, 9-5, sweeping the series. The Spiders fall to 0-5.
  • Spiders SS Francisco Garza was hit in the wrist by a pitch in tonight’s game. He has been diagnosed with bone marrow edema and will likely be out 5-6 weeks.
  • The White Sox defeated the Stars in a combined 2-hit shutout win. Deerborn SP Martin Westfield allowed 2 hits in 7 innings and struck out 9. Joao Thery finished with 2 perfect innings. CF King Jackson recorded both hits for the Stars.
  • Platte SP Travis Voelker allowed 1 run on 6 hits over 7 innings, striking out 8. The Bears beat the Metros, 2-1, to win their fifth straight game and remain unbeaten this season.
  • Plains City beat Taawa to win their 5th straight game. They are 5-0 so far this year, leading the A Division by 2 games.
  • The Owls stomped the Guardians, 12-3. Redwood remains undefeated at 5-0.

Saturday 6/9/1934

  • SP Ron Rivera struck out 8 in 6 IP for the Bears, but the Stags walked off in the 9th with an RBI single from C Rafael Kastillo. This was the first loss this year for the Bears. Platte is tied with Cherricaw atop the C Division at 5-1.
  • Lia Kompos LF Jorge Akil hit 2 HR for 4 RBI as the Miners beat the Stars, 7-5. Miners SP Javier Rosaritoko struck out 7 batters in 4 innings in the no-decision.
  • Owls SP Mike Gurr was masterful, striking out 11 batters while allowing just 1 run on 5 hits as Redwood remained undefeated at 6-0 with a 7-3 victory over Prissley. Blazers SP Sonny Martineau left in the 5th inning with a sore shoulder. He could miss a start or two with tendinitis.
  • White Sox legendary ace Jorge Takato left today’s game with back tightness. He is day-to-day over the next week or so, but is not on the IL. Cherricaw beat Deerborn, 4-3, with a walk-off single from RF Willie Eatmon in the 10th inning.
  • Plains City stayed unbeaten with a 4-3 win at home against Salvation. The Reapers are 6-0, leading A Division by 2 games.
  • Wight dropped their 6th straight, losing to Railey, 6-3. The Spiders remain winless.

Sunday 6/10/1934

  • Spiders CF Carlos Kayra went 4 for 5 with a double and 2 HR for 4 RBI. He scored 4 times, tying the team record. Wight picked up their first win of the year, knocking off the Rivals, 8-6.
  • Cherricaw beat Deerborn, 3-2, to win their 5th straight game, sweeping the series.
  • Stags CF Carlos Teakowa was injured while running the bases against the Bears. His diagnosis is pending. Platte won the game in Roland, 7-4.
  • Redwood SP Will Shufflebottom struck out 8 in 6 IP, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits. The Owls beat the Trail Blazers, 2-1. Redwood is 7-0, in command in the D Division. The Owls are enjoying a staggering +35 run differential so far this year.
  • The Brothers beat the Reapers, 5-2, to end Plains City’s win streak at 6 games.

Monday, 6/4/1934

  • Former White Sox starter Arturo Kolon went off with the Ropers on Opening Day, racking up 13 Ks, allowing only 1 hit over 8.2 scoreless innings. Gallstone beat the Blue Sox, 3-0.
  • After suffering a torn rotator cuff, 34-year old Petchon SP Ricardo Molina has decided to hang up his cleats. He announced his retirement after the game.

Wednesday, 6/6/1934

  • Tillers RF Holth Lass hit 2 solo home runs as the Greys beat the Blue Sox, 5-2.

Friday, 6/8/1934

  • Farport RF Rayan Lefebvre hit 2 HR and went 3 for 4 with 4 RBI, but the Kings beat the Flames, 11-4.

Saturday, 6/9/1934

  • Dragons rookie SS John Hyer launched 3 HR for 5 RBI against the Ropers. Green Rock beat Gallstone, 8-4.
  • Kings 2B Ernesto Terawaa hit a grand slam as part of a 5-RBI day. Lia Puedris beat Gandolire, 8-4.

Sunday, 6/10/1934

  • Toppers RF Karl Spencer hit 2 HR in Trimble’s 10-9 walk-off win against the Flames.
