It looks like it’s going to be the same three teams as last season in the Windsor Cup Playoffs. The Platte Bears have all but locked up the UA West pennant, while the Delle Stars and Deerborn White Sox are fighting for the UA East crown, as well as the league’s best record and an automatic bye to the Windsor Cup Finals.
2-time reigning MVP Mario Olivo of the Delle Stars is primed to win the award for a third straight year. With 11 games to go, he is also in the running for becoming the first player to win a batting triple crown. Olivo currently trails Railey’s Gary Holland for the batting title by .003, trails teammate Pedro Bausi by 1 in the HR race, and leads in the RBI race. Olivo is the closest player to accomplishing the triple crown since teammate Antonio Teakowa finished just .020 batting average points away from accomplishing the feat in 1929.
Only 3 games remain in this year’s NPL season! The Plains City Reapers are holding on to first place, but the Elderwood Lakers trail by 3 games and the Wight Spiders trail by just 1. The Reapers have a chance to become the second, and last, team to win back-to-back National Cups. Starting next year under UUBO realignment, each year’s winning team in the NPL will move up to the UA for the following year, making a back-to-back champion impossible.
This will be the final season under the NPL’s current winner-take-all Regular Season format. Next season, under UUBO realignment, the top four teams from the NPL’s first four seasons will move up to the UA. Those teams have been determined! While the Lakers had a shot this year to catch the Canaries and claim the fourth UA expansion spot, they have come up short, and we now know the teams that will be in each league next season:
UA:
- Delle Stars
- Deerborn White Sox
- Platte Bears
- Railey Rivals
- Northsouth Guardians
- Roland Stags
- Salvation Brothers
- Redwood Owls
- Cherricaw Herders
- Lia Kompos Miners
- Prissley Trail Blazers
- Taawa Chargers
- Plains City Reapers (from NPL)
- Wight Spiders (from NPL)
- Tiny Sea Metros (from NPL)
- Carver Canaries (from NPL)
In 1934, UA divisions will realign to four divisions of four teams, but we must await the end of this season to learn how the teams will be aligned.
NPL:
- Elderwood Lakers
- Petchon Carp
- Trimble Toppers
- Lia Puedris Kings
- Tillers Greys (Tiny Sea) (from Southern League)
- Green Rock Dragons (from Southern League)
- Lia Puedris Blue Sox (from Southern League)
- Farport Flames (Tiny Sea) (from Southern League)
- Kontekia Mystics (from Southern League)
- Gallstone Ropers (from Southern League)
- Gandolire (expansion team, nickname and identity forthcoming)
- Riverside (expansion team, nickname and identity forthcoming)
The 1934 NPL will absorb six of the nine teams from the now-defunct Southern League, and will add two brand new expansion teams.
