1933 Uplantic Baseball: Week 12

August 28, 1933

White Sox LF Juan Tumaini wins his 2nd Player of the Week award of 1933! He hit .450 with 4 HR and 9 RBI this week as his Deerborn White Sox battled in the standings with the Delle Stars for baseball’s best record. Tumaini is hitting .343 with 22 HR on the season.

This weekend saw some trades as teams made moves ahead of today’s trade deadline.

The White Sox and the Stars continued to battle for the UA’s top record, while the Bears looked to further solidify their hold on the UA West.

In the NPL, the defending champion Reapers looked to expand their lead in the standings with the season entering the final few weeks.

Tuesday, 8/22/1933

  • White Sox RH SP Jorge Takato was brilliant today, throwing a 3-hit complete game shutout against the Rivals. He struck out 6 and walked none. Final: DEE 5, RAI 0.
  • It was a wild one in Northsouth. Brothers 3B Ric Garcika hit 3 HR and Guardians LF Andy Thompson hit a triple and 2 HR. Northsouth scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to cement an 8-7 comeback win.
  • Bears SP Mark Lia Yorino struck out 9 batters, allowing no runs on 4 hits over 8 IP. Final: PLA 1, LK 0.
  • Delle 1B Pedro Bausi had a 2-HR night for 26 total on the year, but teammate Mario Olivo hit one of his own to stay ahead of Bausi in the UA HR race with a total of 27. The Stars retained baseball’s best record with a big 15-2 win over the Chargers.

Wednesday, 8/23/1933

  • Rivals LF Juan Castro his his 15th and 16th HRs and RF Gary Holland went 4 for 4 with 3 doubles as Railey bounced back with an 8-4 win at Deerborn. They’ll play the rubber match tomorrow.
  • Deerborn 2B Luke Lia Puedris appeared to briefly lose consciousness after a collision on the base paths today. He was removed from the game and is undergoing treatment for a concussion. He will be day-to-day for the next two weeks.
  • 21-year old rookie Brothers SP Tony Lia Taawa struck out 8 in 6.2 innings, but the Guardians won again, 4-2. Both teams are now 4 games behind the Bears in the UA West.
  • Chargers CF Myles Williams hit 2 HRs, but the Stars won again, 9-6. Delle extends their lead over the White Sox to 2 games with the win.

Thursday, 8/24/1933

  • Herders All-Star rookie SP Claudio Hernankez racked up 10 Ks and allowed no runs on only 2 hits over 6.1 IP. Cherricaw beat Roland, 1-0.
  • Injury-plagued White Sox SP Jacob Hudson left the game with a shoulder injury. He is awaiting a diagnosis. The White Sox beat the Rivals, 7-0.

Friday, 8/25/1933

  • Stars 1B Pedro Bausi has tied teammate Mario Olivo for the league HR lead with his 27th of the season. Delle beat Prissley, 8-2.
  • With injuries to 3 of their starters, the White Sox relied on rookie LHP Yassine Gaudin today. He stepped up, striking out 9 over 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits. Rookie C Alejandro Lia Loma walked it off in the bottom of the 9th with an RBI single to give Deerborn the win, 4-3. The loss is the Chargers’ 7th straight and makes them the first team this season to be officially eliminated from playoff contention.
  • The Rivals beat the Herders, 3-1, but Railey ace SP Sonny Hernankez with a seemingly serious right foot injury. We await a diagnosis.
  • Bears SP Adam Evans went 7.1 scoreless innings with 8 Ks and 5 hits allowed. Platte beat Redwood, 4-0, to retain a 5-game lead in the UA West. The Bears have now won 7 straight games. They are 4 games back of Delle for the league’s top record.

Saturday, 8/26/1933

  • In a crushing blow to a team in whose pitching staff is already missing two starters, Deerborn RH SP Jacob Hudson is done for the year. He has a torn rotator cuff, which could potentially keep him out of action through 1934. Hudson appeared on the verge of tears as he left the clubhouse. He refused comment.
  • The White Sox shored up their ailing pitching staff, bringing veteran RP Esteban Muiru back to Deerborn in a trade with Prissley. The Trail Blazers will receive LHP prospect Kamel Cheron.
  • The Rivals prepared for the final playoff push, adding LHP Brahim Mujer in a trade with the Chargers. Taawa received a pair of prospects.
  • Brothers SP Tom Lia Morro allowed 4 hits over 7 scoreless innings in Salvation’s 4-0 win at Lia Kompos.
  • Guardians 3B Luis Hecini is out for the rest of the year after breaking his elbow on a HBP. Tragically, this was 24-year old Hecini’s first appearance for the club all season. Northsouth beat Roland, 6-4.
  • White Sox CF Jimmy Lia Morro hit 2 HRs and SP Isaac Lee struck out 8 batters over 6.2 IP in Deerborn’s 7-1 win over the lowly Chargers.
  • Stars LF Curt Lawson hit 2 homers in Delle’s 11-5 win over Prissley. Delle is baseball’s top team and has won 5 straight. They lead Deerborn by 2 games.
  • SP Jim Stanley went 7 innings as the Bears won their 8th straight game, beating Redwood, 2-1.

Sunday, 8/27/1933

  • C Steve Austin is headed to the Stags from Prissley. The Trail Blazers will receive young reliever Pedro Muguerza. Austin is hitting .255 with 4 HR this year while Muguerza has made 26 relief appearances for a 3-2 record and a 5.32 ERA.
  • Brothers CF Dang Gurr will be day-to-day over the next 2 weeks with shoulder inflammation. Salvation lost to Lia Kompos today, 12-7.
  • White Sox RH SP Jorge Takato was brilliant again, allowing just 1 run on 1 hit and striking out 13 batters over 8 IP. His 13 Ks ties the Deerborn team record. Final: DEE 6, TAA 1.
  • Railey swept Cherricaw with a 5-2 win at home. The Rivals are 5 games behind Deerborn for the UA Wild Card spot.
  • Trail Blazers LF John Bunce hit his 3rd HR of the week (his 25th of the season) as Prissley ended Delle’s 5-game win streak with a 12-2 victory. The Stars remain 1 game ahead of the White Sox for baseball’s best record. Delle LH SP Kevin Leroux left the game after an inning of relief with an injury. He has a sprained elbow and could miss around a week.
  • Redwood RF Ronald Joyner hit a double and a HR in the Owls’ 8-5 win over Platte. The loss ends an 8-game winning streak for the Bears, and they fail to capitalize on losses by both Salvation and Northsouth today. Platte still enjoys a 5-game lead in the UA West.

Monday, 8/21/1933

  • Lia Puedris 1B Luis Rokodriguez left the yard twice as the Kings beat the Spiders, 5-4.
  • Canaries SP Ron Taylor went 8 innings for the win in Carver’s 4-3 victory over Elderwood. With a Reapers win and losses by the Lakers and Spiders today, Plains City now has a 4-game cushion in the standings.

Wednesday, 8/23/1933

  • Kings SP Greg Crepin allowed 1 run on just 2 hits over 6.2 innings as Lia Puedris again beat the first-place Reapers, 4-3.
  • Elderwood 1B Blake Mercier took the lead in the NPL HR race with his 17th as the Lakers beat the Metros, 7-6. The Lakers trail the Reapers by 3 games.
  • Spiders SS Jeff Pekerez hit 2 homers in Wight’s 8-0 drumming of Trimble. Wight is now 3 games back of Plains City.

Thursday, 8/24/1933

  • Carp DH Francisco Kosgei hit a pair of HRs in Petchon’s 8-4 win over Carver.
  • The Kings have beat the Reapers again, 7-3. Lia Puedris C Sergio Salinatas hit 2 HR and LF Jorge Akil hit his 16th of the year. However, Kings star 1B Luis Rokodriguez strained his hamstring and will be day-to-day for around 3 weeks.
  • Wight 3B Ryad Renaud and Trimble 1B Lee Gutierrekaz both tied the NPL HR lead with 17 total HRs. The Spiders edged the Toppers, 5-4. The Spiders now trail the Reapers by 2 games in the standings.
  • Tiny Sea 1B Chuck Parker went deep twice in the Metros’ 10-2 win at Elderwood. Tiny Sea is 4 games out of first; Elderwood is 3 games out of first.

Friday, 8/25/1933

  • Reapers SP Achille Roy went 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1B Antonin Legrand hit a double and a homer as Plains City avoided a sweep with a 5-0 win over Lia Puedris.
  • Carp SP Alfonso Lopetokaz struck out 7 batters over 8 scoreless innings, allowing just 4 hits. Petchon swept Carver with a 3-1 win.
  • Metros SP Carlos Pultudos allowed just 1 hit over 5.2 scoreless innings. The Lakers came back to beat the Metros in 11 innings, 3-2.

Saturday, 8/26/1933

  • Wight CF Jim Ellison went 2 for 2 with a triple and a HR as the Spiders took the first game in a big series with first-place Plains City, 6-4. Wight now trails the Reapers by 2 games.
  • The Carp won their 5th straight game, beating Tiny Sea, 5-2. However, infielders Kylian Trimble and Wally Jensen were injured. Trimble (foot contusion) will miss 2 weeks, while Jensen (knee tendinitis) will be day-to-day for a few days.
  • Kings 23-year old LH SP Ben Anderson went 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 8. Lia Puedris beat Elderwood, 2-1.

Sunday, 8/27/1933

  • Lakers 1B Blake Mercier hit his league-best 18th HR and LF Len Bryn went yard twice in Elderwood’s 8-2 win over the Kings. The Lakers remain 3 games back of the first-place Reapers.
  • Petchon won their 6th straight game with a 4-2 win over Tiny Sea. Morgan Burnett allowed 2 runs on 6 hits and struck out 7 over 7 IP.
