1933 Uplantic Baseball: Week 11

August 21, 1933

Trail Blazers LF John Bunce is Week 11’s UA Player of the Week! He hit .480 with a .500 on-base percentage this week, including 4 HR and 10 RBI. Overall, Bunce is a gem on a bad team, as Prissley is currently 22 games out of a playoff spot.

A tumultuous week leaves the standings looking a bit different in the UA, and we get a no-hitter in the NPL!

UA News

Monday, 8/14/1933

  • Roland SP Noa Dutertre threw a gem, striking out 10 over a full 9 inning outing and allowing 2 runs. The Roland offense couldn’t get him any support, however, and the Chargers beat the Stags, 2-0.
  • Herders SP Wiley Ellysian struck out 9 batters in 5.1 innings, but the Trail Blazers got the better of the Cherricaw bullpen, winning the game, 3-1.

Tuesday, 8/15/1933

  • Owls SP Evan Francis struck out 11 batters over 5.1 innings of work, but a 4th inning grand slam home run from Chargers rookie SS John Proper gave Taawa their second straight win, 4-1. The Chargers have been on something of a tear lately; they have a winning record over the last week, a first for them this season.
  • Prissley SP Esteban Muiru threw 5.1 hitless innings with 7 Ks and just one walk. The Blazers beat the Guardians, 7-1.
  • Northsouth starter Doug Manns left in the third inning of today’s game with a seemingly painful arm injury. We await a diagnosis. Additionally, all-star RP Raul Babechi came out of the game with back spasms, and will likely miss 4-5 days.
  • Salvation outlasted Deerborn in a 17-inning game that took nearly five hours to complete. Starting pitchers Tony Lia Taawa (SAL) and Vist Sek (DEE) both performed very well, striking out 7 and 8 batters, respectively. They each allowed just one run. Salvation broke the marathon tie in the top of the 17th inning with an RBI double from 2B Cliff Moyer. Brothers SS Augusto Hernankez tied the UA record with 3 triples in the game. Final/17: SAL 2, DEE 1.
  • Herders LF Holth Lass went 3 for 4 with a 3-run HR as Cherricaw beat Platte, 8-3. The Bears have struggled this month, going 6-8 so far in August. They still hold a 3-game lead over Northsouth in the UA West.
  • Stars 1B Pedro Bausi stayed hot with his 24th HR of the year. He is now just 2 HR off of teammate Mario Olivo’s league lead. Olivo hit 3 doubles in the game. The Stars are now even with the White Sox for the league’s best record and the UA East lead. However, they received a scare when LH SP Kevin Leroux had to leave the game in the 2nd inning with back pain. He is expected to miss a start or two with back soreness. RF Antonio Teakowa also came up hobbled for Delle. He strained a quad while running the bases, and will be limited over the next week or so.

Wednesday, 8/16/1933

  • Prissley LF John Bunce went 4 for 5 with 2 HR and 5 total RBI , but the Guardians beat the Trail Blazers, 10-6.
  • SS Gary Allaire went 2 for 3 with an RBI and RF Antonio Teakowa hit his 21st HR as Delle beat Lia Kompos, 6-1. With another White Sox loss to the Brothers, the Stars have now taken over first place in the UA East along with the league’s best record at 45-21.

Thursday, 8/17/1933

  • Guardians RF Rogne Sem hit 2 doubles and a HR for 4 total RBI. 2B Gerald Lewis scored 4 times to tie the team record. Northsouth beat Prissley, 11-2. With the Bears’ loss in Cherricaw, Northsouth is now 2 games back in the West.
  • The White Sox avoided a sweep with a lopsided 7-0 win against the Brothers. SP Jacob Hudson went 7.2 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 8. 1B Bob Hove hit his 25th HR, one behind Stars 3B Mario Olivo for the league lead.
  • 23-year old Chargers C Juan Valenzuelaka had a massive day at the plate, going 3 for 5 with a double and 2 HR for 6 RBI. He ended the game on a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th to give Taawa a dramatic 9-7 win over Redwood.

Friday, 8/18/1933

  • Delle beat Redwood, 2-1, to keep the league’s best record. The Stars have won 5 straight and 9 of their last 10.
  • Stags CF Ramon Zuniga tied the UA HR lead with his 26th HR of the season. Roland beat Deerborn, 5-3. The White Sox now trail the Stars by 2 games in East.
  • Rookie RF Jose Rivera went 3 for 4 with a double and 4 RBI in Salvation’s 9-8 victory over Cherricaw.
  • Bears CF Andy Bernard had a 4-for-4 day as Platte beat up on the Guardians, 8-1. Platte leads both Salvation and Northsouth by 3 games in the UA West.

Saturday, 8/19/1933

  • Bears 2B Tony Sellimi went 4 for 4 with 5 RBI as Platte tightened their grip on first place in the West with a 7-1 win over Northsouth. However, Bears SP justin Russell left the game with elbow soreness and will miss around 5 weeks with severe inflammation.
  • White Sox RP Francisco Terawaa enjoyed a spot start, going 6.1 innings and allowing just 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 6. Thanks to a 2-run homer by LF Juan Tumaini, Deerborn beat Roland, 2-1.
  • Miners LF Brandon Itaawa hit 2 HR in Lia Kompos’s 6-2 win over Prissley.
  • Redwood SP Connor Johnston went 7 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 7 as the Owls beat the Stars, 1-0. Delle’s UA East lead is down to 1 game over Deerborn.

Sunday, 8/20/1933

  • The Deerborn bullpen has added even more firepower with LHP Wiley Ellysian, in a trade with the Herders. Ellysian has pithced well this season, striking out 57 batters in 55 innings with a 3.11 ERA. Cherricaw received three young prospects in the deal.
  • 22-year old Stags RHP Mike Collignon notched 10 Ks over 7 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits. Roland beat Deerborn, 3-0.
  • The Miners edged the Trail Blazers in an all-out slug fest, 14-13. The game went 10 innings after Lia Kompos rallied for 4 runs to overcome a 5-run top half of the inning by Prissley, sending the game to the 10th. The Blazers rallied for more in the 10th, but the Miners once again surpassed them with a 5-run inning to seal the win. Trail Blazers 3B Ugo Monnier hit a double and 2 HR for 5 total RBI in the losing effort.
  • Platte RF Gurr Gurr hit a double and a grand slam HR for 5 total RBI. The Bears swept the Guardians with a 7-4 win in Northsouth. Platte leads Salvation by 3 games for the UA West lead.
  • The Stars failed to capitalize on a White Sox loss earlier in the day, losing 3-2 to Redwood. The Stars still lead the UA East by a game. Delle 2B Bobby Moyle came up with a limp while running the bases. We await a diagnosis. Owls Rf Gurr Engh broke his foot in the game and will miss 3-4 weeks while it heals.

Monday, 8/14/1933

  • Reapers RF Jose Gomez hit his 10th HR of the year in Plains City’s 9-5 win over Trimble. He has gone deep in 3 of his last 4 games, but is well off the pace of his incredible, record-breaking run of 33 homers last year. The win keeps the Reapers alone in first place.
  • Wight 3B Ryad Renaud tied the NPL lead with his 15th HR, as the Spiders beat the Metros, 4-2.
  • Petchon DH Francisco Kosgei went 3 for 4 with 2 HR as the Carp downed the Lakers, 5-3. The Lakers have struggled this month since spending most of July in first place. They are currently 2 games behind the Reapers.

Tuesday, 8/15/1933

  • Reapers SP Achille Roy has thrown a no-hitter! He struck out 5 and walked 2 over 9 scoreless innings. The feat took 101 pitches. First-place Plains City beat Trimble, 1-0. Roy said this after the game: “I am on cloud nine! I won’t say ‘I can’t believe it’ because I believe in myself. I don’t know what to say. Wow! Just, wow!” The Reapers now lead the Spiders by 2 games in the NPL standings.

Wednesday, 8/16/1933

  • Reapers 1B Antonin Legrand hit 2 HR for 5 RBI as Plains City stomped Carver, 12-2. The Reapers have now won 10 of their last 11 games and are alone in first place.
  • Elderwood LF Jesus Lia Taawa went yard twice for 4 RBI in the Lakers’ 4-1 over the Toppers. The Lakers trail the Reapers by 3 games.
  • Wight C Ferdinand Girard was hit in the hand while pinch hitting. We await a diagnosis. The Spiders lost to Petchon, 2-1. Wight now trails Plains City by 3 games.

Thursday, 8/17/1933

  • The Reapers won their 5th straight game with a 6-2 win over the Canaries.
  • Toppers SP Elliot Gaillard allowed 1 run on 2 hits over 7.2 IP and struck out 7. Trimble handed the struggling Lakers another loss, 5-2.
  • Kings SP Greg Crepin struck out 7 batters, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits over 7 IP. Metros SP allowed 2 runs on 3 hits over 8 IP. Lia Puedris beat Tiny Sea in the pitchers’ duel, 2-1.

Friday, 8/18/1933

  • 1B Antonin Legrand and CF TJ Harrison each went 3 for 4 as the Reapers won their 6th straight, 7-3 over the Canaries. Plains City has opened up a 4-game lead in the NPL standings.
  • The Lakers beat the Toppers, 6-5, but CF Tim Moore came out of the game clutching his shoulder after making a throw from the outfield. We await a diagnosis.
  • Metros SP Albert Sumait threw a lights-out 7 innings, allowing no runs on just 1 hit with 9 Ks. Tiny Sea stomped Lia Puedris, 8-0.

Saturday, 8/19/1933

  • The Reapers’ win streak hit 7 games today as they topped the Metros, 4-2. Tim Farmers pitched well, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits over 5 IP. Plains City retains a 4-game in the NPL.
  • Lakers 1B Blake Mercier had an incredible day on offense, going 4 for 6 with 2 HR for 7 total RBI and scoring 4 runs. The Lakers ran up the score on Carver, 17-4. Elderwood trails Plains City by 4 games in the standings.

Sunday, 8/20/1933

  • Lakers SP Mike Gurr went 7 scoreless innings for 4 hits, striking out 6. Elderwood beat Carver, 3-0. The Lakers are 3 games behind the Reapers for first place.
  • It took 14 innings, but the Metros ended the Reapers’ win streak at 7 games with a 9-6 win today. Ambroise Forestier had a 3-run homer and 4 total RBI in the win. The Metros trail the Reapers by 4 games.
