RIVALS STADIUM, RAILEY, CARROL — Despite his East All-Stars squad’s loss in the game, Delle Stars IF Mario Olivo will add another accolade to his trophy case. He has become the first player to win a second All-Star Game MVP! The three-time All-Star has now won 2 UA MVP awards, 2 All-Star Game MVP awards, and a Windsor Cup Finals MVP award in addition to leading the Stars to back-to-back Windsor Cup championships in the last 2 seasons.
In front of a packed Rivals Stadium, Mario Olivo started the scoring in the 6th UA All-Star Game with a solo homer in the first inning off of Bears LH SP Craig Ogg. Olivo then reached base in the 4th inning by drawing a walk from Guardians RHP Ron Waldman. Olivo then scored from third base on a sac fly from Rivals IF Fure Len, much to the delight of the Railey home crowd.
The East held their lead until the 7th inning, when rookie Brothers RF Jose Rivera launched a 2-run homer off of Rivals ace Sonny Hernankez, tying the game, 2-2. Hernankez said after the game: “In the moment, I was mad at myself. And I’m still not happy about leaving that pitch out there. But at the same time, I really am honored to be here, representing the Rivals here in our house. But, yeah, I should have pitched better.”
With the game tied going into the 9th inning and both teams out of relievers, league officials once again considered calling the game in a tie. The league reportedly mulled over a tie declaration in the late stages of 1931’s 11-inning All-Star affair. However, Bears C Eloi Rousset stepped up against Stars CL David Rogers and launched a solo shot to left field to give the West a 3-2 lead in this year’s game.
RHP Len Odden (1928 All-Star Game MVP with Salvation, now with Northsouth) finished the bottom of the 9th to seal the win for the UA West All-Stars. The win brings the West and East into a 3-3 tie in the all-time series. This will presumably be the last All-Star game between the East and West, as the UA will realign in 1934 with non-geographically-based divisions.
