July 10, 1933

2-time MVP Mario Olivo is PotW for Week 5! Olivo hit .520 this week with 5 HR and 6 RBI. He is tied for the league lead with 15 HR this year, with his Stars team facing a tough race in the UA East.

Both major leagues held their First-Year Player Drafts this week. The Cherricaw Herders took 19-year old infielder Ken Wilborn first overall in the UA Draft. Wilborn graduated this spring from Ilmore High School in Barrow, Snowgate. The UA and NPL will have until early September to sign their draft picks or risk losing them to free agency.

Races in the UA East and West are already fierce as we begin the second month of the season!

Monday, 7/3/1933

  • Stars 3B Mario Olivo went 4 for 4 and hit his 11th HR today as Delle topped Cherricaw, 4-3.
  • Lia Kompos 3B Hichem Colle teed off for 2 HR and 3 RBI in the Miners’ 9-0 pounding of the Chargers.
  • Bears 1B Gabriel Martinezto hit a pair of HR as Platte prevailed over Railey in the battle for first-place teams. Rivals SP Sonny Hernankez struck out 10 in the loss. Final: PLA 5, RAI 2.
  • The Northsouth Guardians beat the Redwood Owls, 3-1, to come to within a game of Platte in the UA West.

Tuesday, 7/4/1933

  • Stars SP Stanley Quinn went 8 scoreless innings and 3B Mario Olivo hit his 12th HR in Delle’s 5-0 win over the Herders.
  • Deerborn SP Mathew Huertata struck out 8 batters and allowed 2 runs over 8 innings as the White Sox took the rubber match in Prissley, 5-2.
  • Brothers LF Carlos Kayra suffered a concussion today as he collided headfirst with the knee of Stags SS Hector Holman. Kayra will likely miss some time as he recovers. The Stags beat Salvation, 5-3.
  • Redwood SP Evan Francis struck out 8 batters, but the Guardians beat the Owls, 3-2.

Wednesday, 7/5/1933

  • The UA held its Fist-Year Player Draft today. The Cherricaw Herders took 19-year old infielder Ken Wilborn, out of Barrow, Snowgate, first overall.
  • Stags RH SP Edward Mercier’s sore wrist will keep him out a little longer than the team originally anticipated. Doctors confirmed again that there is no breakage, but recommended Mercier stay out of action until at least July 10.
  • Deerborn CF Curt Sawyer homered for the second straight game as the White Sox beat the first-place Bears, 6-3.
  • The Guardians beat the Stars, 2-0, in Delle. Northsouth is now tied for first with Platte in the West division.
  • Salvation 2B Cliff Moyer went 3 for 5 with a HR as the Brothers beat the Rivals in 12 innings, 9-6. The loss puts Railey 1 game back of Deerborn in the East.
  • Stags CF Ramon Zuniga went deep again for his 12th HR of the year as Roland beat Taawa, 11-3. The Chargers have lost 10 of their last 11 games. With attendance spiraling, rumors of folding or relocation are moving through the Taawa fan base.

Thursday, 7/6/1933

  • Trail Blazers LF John Bunce had another great game against his former team, with 2 HR and 4 RBI, as Prissley beat Cherricaw, 5-4.
  • White Sox 1B Bob Hove hit his league-leading 14th HR as Deerborn beat Platte again to keep their 1-game lead over Railey in the UA East. White Sox SP Jorge Takato went 7 innings with 1 ER on 4 hits and struck out 8 in the 6-1 win over the Bears.
  • Stags CF Ramon Zuniga stayed hot tonight with a 2 HR game and 4 RBI. He has hit 4 HR in the last 3 days. Rookie C Rafael Kastillo also had a big 2-HR night for the Stags. Roland beat Taawa again, 9-7.

Friday, 7/7/1933

  • Prissley RF Francisco Katakowa hit 2 doubles and a 3-run walk-off HR in the Trail Blazers’ 6-5 win against Cherricaw.
  • Stars 3B Mario Olivo went 4 for 5 and hit another HR to tie the league lead with 14 total. Delle took the series from Northsouth with an 8-5 win at home.
  • 23-year old Railey rookie SP Pedro Rivera pitched 7 shutout innings with just 1 hit allowed and supported himself with his first career HR as the Rivals beat the Brothers, 3-0.
  • Stags CF Ramon Zuniga hit yet another homer to take the UA lead with 15 HRs. Roland swept the Chargers with a 12-9 win. Boos rained down on the home team as the Chargers failed to complete a comeback in the bottom of the 9th.
  • Terrible news for the Lia Kompos faithful: Miners 3B Hichem Colle left the game tonight with a herniated disc in his spine. He will likely miss around 5 weeks. Lia Kompos beat Redwood, 8-0. The Miners are currently 4 games behind the Bears and Guardians in the UA West.
  • Bob Hove stayed red-hot with his 15th HR, tying Ramon Zuniga for the league lead. The White Sox completed a 3-game sweep of the Bears. Deerborn retains a 1-game lead over the Rivals in the East, while the Bears are tied for first with Northsouth in the West. Final: DEE 8, PLA 3.

Saturday 7/8/1933

  • Bears SP Will Shufflbottom allowed just 1 hit in 6.1 scoreless innings and C Eloi Rousset hit a double and a HR as Platte stomped Cherricaw, 7-2.
  • Stars 3B Mario Olivo went deep for the third straight game and his 5th HR of the week, tying the UA lead with 15 total. Teammate Antonio Teakowa hit his 9th and 10th HRs as the Stars beat the Miners, 7-0. Unfortunately, Stars SP Jeffrey Irvin left the game in the 1st inning with an apparent herniated disc in his spine.
  • The White Sox overcame a 6-run Salvation comeback to beat the Brothers at the City Center, 8-7. 1B Bob Hove’s sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th put Deerborn over the top. They extend their lead over Railey in the East to 2 games with the win.
  • Northsouth 1B Cal Oluoch hit a pair of HR for 4 RBI and the Guardians beat Prissley, 6-4. The Guardians remain tied with Bears atop the UA West.

Sunday 7/9/1933

  • Stags SP Edward Mercier attempted to return from his inflamed wrist injury and was forced to leave the game early after a start in which he gave up 4 runs on 7 hits over 3.2 innings. After the game, Mercier said that his wrist felt ok, but that his “whole arm is just really, really tired.” Railey 3B Fure Len left the game with an apparent back injury after an awkward slide on the base paths. The Rivals won the game, 4-2.
  • Owls SP Evan Francis struck out 10 batters in 6 innings, but the Chargers managed to win in 13 innings, 5-4.
  • Stars 1B Pedro Bausi had a 5-RBI game as Delle beat Lia Kompos, 8-5.
  • Salvation C Raul Bahaa had a 3-run walk-off bomb in the 10th to cap off a nice comeback win over Deerborn. 3B Ric Garcika hit 2 HR for the brothers, while Deerborn LF Juan Tumaini hit 2 HR for the losing side. White Sox SP Jacob Hudson left early with a calf strain, but is expected to be ready for his next start. Deerborn leads Railey by 1 game in the UA East. The Stars are 2 games back.
  • Guardians 1B Cal Oluoch came up limping and left the game tonight. We await a diagnosis. Northsouth beat Prissley, 5-3.
  • Bears RF Michael Moore hit a double and 2 HR for 5 RBI. SP Todd Voelker struck out 7 batters in 4.2 innings. Platte beat Cherricaw, 8-4, and remains tied for first with the Guardians in the West.

  • Reapers 1B Vance Adegoke went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI in Plain City’s 6-2 win over Carver.

Tuesday, 7/4/1933

  • Lakers SP Charlie LefFlore struck out 7 batters in 5.2 scoreless innings as Elderwood won their 4th straight game, 2-0, over Trimble.
  • The Reapers walked off in the 13th inning on an RBI single from new DH Antonin Legrand. Final/13: PC 4, CAR 3.
  • Carp SS Wally Jensen had a HR and 4 total RBI as Petchon handed Wight their first loss of the year, 5-2.

Wednesday, 7/5/1933

  • Spiders SP Desire Lemoine left today’s game with a sore shoulder. A diagnosis is forthcoming from team doctors. Lemoine threw the only no-hitter in Uplantic pro baseball history in 1929. The Spiders beat the Carp, 11-6.

Thursday, 7/6/1933

  • The NPL held its First-Year Player Draft today. The Lia Puedris Kings selected 21-year old power-hitting 1B Elvis “Toto” Burke first overall.
  • Reapers RF Jose Gomez had a 4-RBI game as Plains City handed Tiny Sea another loss, 10-5. The Tiny Sea Metros lost their 6th straight game to start the season 0-6. Rookie Metros CF Ramzi Lalanne boldly called a players-only meeting. Most players refused to elaborate on the contents of the meeting. Lalanne simply said “Just some things we need to take care of and get out in the open. We’ll be better for it.”
  • Lakers SP Mike Gurr went 7.1 1-hit innings with 7 Ks as the Lakers stayed undefeated with a 1-0 win over the Canaries.
  • Toppers young SP Elliot Gaillard went 9 innings and only allowed a single hit, but the Carp won the pitcher’s duel in the 11th inning, 1-0, on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Petchon RF Francisco Kosgei. Trimble is still looking for their first win.

Friday, 7/7/1933

  • The Metros finally got their first win with a dramatic comeback victory over Plains City that ended with a 2-run walk-off blast from 3B Juan Korrea. Metros SP Albert Sumait went 7.1 innings with 12 Ks and 4 ER in the no-decision. Final/10: TS 6, PC 4.
  • Spiders SP Vic Mitchell threw a 3-hit shutout as Wight beat Lia Puedris, 7-0. Legendary LF Jorge Akil left the game for the Kings with a sore elbow after a diving play, but is not expected to miss any time.
  • Carp SP Domingo Lia Itoldino went 8.1 scoreless innings with 5 hits allowed and 3 Ks as Petchon handed Trimble their 7th straight loss, 1-0. Toppers SP Leland Mason left the game with an apparently serious shoulder injury. Trimble is 0-7 to start 1933.
  • The Lakers stayed undefeated with a 6-4 win over the Canaries. Elderwood 1B Blake Mercier was 2 for 4 with a HR.

Saturday, 7/8/1933

  • Elderwood 1B Blake Mercier hit 2 more HR and tied the Lakers team record with 7 RBI. The Lakers beat up on the Metros, 14-4. Elderwood is 8-0.

Sunday, 7/9/1933

  • The Metros are off to a rough start, but they managed a 12-inning, 3-2 victory over the Lakers, handing Elderwood their first loss of the year. Tiny Sea LF Ambroise Forestier hit his 3rd HR for his new team in the win.
  • Canaries 3B Bob Jones left the yard twice for 5 RBI as Carver beat Petchon, 8-4.
  • Plains City SP Tim Farmer allowed just 2 hits and struck out 7 over 5 scoreless innings. The Reapers beat the Kings, 4-0.
