1932-33 UPFF: End of the Regular Season

December 6, 1932

It’s the final week of the Regular Season! The top two teams from each conference will go to the playoffs to play for the Pennington Cup.

Chaparrals RB Robert Lavender is the Offensive Player of the Week for Week 14. He had 136 rushing yards on 23 carries and 3 TDs. He finished with 1195 yards and 14 TDs for the year. He was number one in rushing TDs and one of just three players to top 1,000 yards.

Pumas CB Shawn Manalani’i was all over the field with 6 tackles, an interception returned for a TD, and a forced fumble which he recovered himself.

Unfortunately, due to ISP issues, Uplantic Football is back to a blog-only format, indefinitely. The connection just isn’t reliable enough for streaming to work on a regular schedule. I’ll still be doing retro game streams on twitch.tv/lowkisapfoot when the ISP allows for it.

Week 14 Scoreboard:

PC (5-7) @ SAL (6-6): After rallying from an 0-5 start to win 6 of their last 7 games, the Salvation Brothers hosted the Plains City Travelers with a chance to clinch a spot in the NC Championship with a win. The Travelers would need to win and get help in other games for a chance to make the playoff game. The Travelers would have to pin their hopes on third string QB Eddie Savage with Neal Valentin nursing a knee injury. The Brothers struck first with a short TD drive after a tough opening stand by the defense. The Salvation defense followed with a big quarterback sack and a safety on the next possession to make it 9-0. The Brothers never looked back, holding the Travelers to just 110 yard total offense in a decisive shutout win. Salvation QB Terry Odom was great, throwing for 344 yards and a touchdown. Salvation sacked Eddie Savage 7 times for a total loss of 46 yards. The Brothers have put together another impressive win and punched their ticket to the NC Championship against the A’s! Final: SAL 29, PC 0.

ELD (5-7) @ DEL (6-6): The Elderwood Archers visited Delle to take on the Chaparrals. With the Brothers’ win on Thursday, the Archers had been eliminated, leaving only the Chaps with a future for which to play in the season finale. With a win in this game, the Chaps would clinch a spot in the SC Championship. Delle QB Hubert Aguirre and RB Robert Lavender took command in this game as they have done all season. Lavender was a workhorse for 136 yards on 23 carries and 3 rushing TDs, including an 88-yard TD scamper in the second quarter. Aguirre was 18 of 22 passing for 227 yards and a TD. Archers WR Benjamin Magnin once again lit up the field with 134 receiving yards and a TD on 6 catches, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Chaparrals. Delle wins at home and awaits the outcome of the rest of this week’s games to find out their opponent and the location of the conference playoff game in two weeks. Final: DEL 35, ELD 20.

PLA (5-7) @ TAA (6-6): The Platte Cragsmen went to Taawa to face the Jackals at Sapfoot Stadium West in the teams’ Regular Season finale. The Cragsmen were eliminated from playoff contention with the Delle win earlier in the day. The Jackals would need a win here and some help from Green Rock against the Pumas to make the playoffs. Starting Jackals QB James De La Cruz left in the first quarter after two brutal sacks by Platte LB Eric Valentin, leaving the offense in the hands of backup QB James Nakamura. Platte looked to play the spoiler, and took advantage of a a Valentin strip sack to get the ball and strike first. The Cragsmen led 10-0 lead after a quarter. The Jackals stormed back with a strong second half from Nakamura and RB Dale Moulin. Nakamura finished 17 for 23 with 2 TDs and an INT. Moulin rushed for 113 yards on 22 attempts. The Cragsmen were held scoreless by the Taawa defense in the second half. Platte QB Alvin Crane would also have to leave the game with a bruised cheekbone after a rough sack by Taawa LB William Goodman. In a tale of two halves, the Jackals overcame the Cragsmen to keep their playoff hopes alive. Final: TAA 24, PLA 10.

NOR (10-2) @ TS (6-6): The Tiny Sea Titans hosted the Northsouth Athletics to close out the season. The Titans were eliminated from playoff contention by the Brothers with their Thursday night win. The A’s had already clinched home field advantage in the playoffs, but were in need of some positive momentum after some costly injuries and a blowout last week at the hands of the Salvation Brothers whom they will soon face in the NC Championship. Northsouth received a scare when starting QB Branden Warren went down with a head injury after a sack by Titans LB harry Kontreras late in the first half. Warren’s status remains unknown for the NC Championship, but he is likely to be good to go by the time the game rolls around after the break. Backup QB Sean Trask filled in in the second half and played decently. Trask has actually played quite a bit with Warren falling victim to some injuries throughout the season, and done a tremendous job. The A’s end their season with a win and prepare for the Brothers in the NC Championship. Final: NOR 23, TS 17.

LK (7-5) @ GR (4-8): The Lia Kompos Pumas visited the Green Rock Warriors in the final game of the UPFF Regular Season on Monday night. The Pumas needed a win to clinch the number one record in the Southern Conference and home field advantage in the SC Championship against Delle. With a loss, the Pumas would miss out on the playoffs in a tiebreaker to the Taawa Jackals. The Warriors hung around in the first half, but the Pumas stepped on the gas pedal and outscored Lia Kompos 31-0 in the second half to cruise to a lopsided victory. Pumas QB Solomon Brito took up the mantle with starter John Parva out, as he did all season long when Lia Kompos needed him. Brito threw for 263 yards and 4 TDs. Warriors QB William Kastaneda threw a pair of INTs in the loss, one of which was a pick-six returned 45 yards for the score by CB Shawn Manalani’i. The Pumas put up a statement win on the road, take the top spot in the conference, and will host the Chaparrals in the SC Championship! Final: LK 50, GR 10.

News:

  • Playoff match-ups are set! The Northsouth Athletics will host the Salvation Brothers in the NC Championship, and the Lia Kompos Pumas will host the Delle Chaparrals in the SC Championship. Both games will take place on December 18.
  • The Taawa Jackals just missed the SC Championship, losing the tiebreaker for second place to the Delle Chaparrals. The Chaps had a 5-3 conference record compared to Taawa’s 4-4 mark. The playoff snub stings after a 3-game win streak to end the season, but the future looks bright for the Jackals.
  • Athletics QB Branden Warren (concussion) is “probable” to play in the NC Championship against Salvation. If he can’t go, backup Sean Trask will get the nod. Trask started the A’s first four games of the season, and went 3-1 as the starter.
  • The A’s league-best defense will be hobbled in the NC Championship. FS Roy Gilles (wrist) and CB Damon Francis (quad) are done for the year. FS Cletus Victor (hip) is “doubtful” and LB Taylor Maldonado (knee) is “questionable.” The A’s suffered a tough blowout loss without Gilles, Francis, and Maldonado at the hands of the Brothers last week, and they’ll face them again in the NC Championship.
  • Salvation’s original starting QB Wlliam Maya (quad) will likely not be available for the NC Championship against Northsouth. He has been out since Week 4. Backup Terry Odom has led the Brothers to an incredible turnaround this season to reach the NC Championship after their 0-4 start under Maya. If the Brothers beat the A’s and make it to the Uplantic Bowl, and if Maya is available to play, the Brothers are likely to stick with Odom, but we will have to wait and see.
  • The Brothers will likely be without their top offensive lineman against the Athletics. C Guy Benson is out for 1-2 weeks with a dislocated knee. OT Scott Rau was also roughed up this week, but he is listed as “probable” for the NC Championship with a deep thigh bruise.
  • The Delle Chaps defense will be somewhat compromised for the SC Championship against the Pumas. They will likely without LBs Ezra Gudarlearza (bulging disc) and Loren Solikaz (hamstring) for the game. FS Robert Monterola (foot) and SS Roger K’Tarra (blurred vision) are both listed as “probable.”
  • Pumas QB John Parva is “questionable” for the SC Championship against Delle. The Pumas have had remarkable success with their “next man up” attitude, using three different quarterbacks this season. So, if Solomon Brito gets the start at QB, the Pumas are confident in his ability to lead the team to the Uplantic Bowl.
  • The Pumas defense will be missing LB Jamie Oliver (jammed toe) for the SC Championship. DT Kylian Kosaro (bruised jaw) is listed as “doubtful” for the game.
