1932-33 UPFF: Week 12

November 22, 1932

Platte’s Adam Bradshaw had quite a game this week, despite the Cragsmen’s loss in Delle. Bradshaw had 159 yards rushing on just 12 carries, and 3 rushing TDs, along with 7 receptions for another 92 yards. This is his second PotW award this season.

Elderwood LB Dallas Amalla takes home Defensive Player of the Week this week. He had 6 tackles, 2 sacks, and forced a record 3 fumbles, one of which he recovered himself.

Unfortunately, due to ISP issues, Uplantic Football is back to a blog-only format, indefinitely. The connection just isn’t reliable enough for streaming to work on a regular schedule. I’ll still be doing retro game streams on twitch.tv/lowkisapfoot when the ISP allows for it. Maybe we can figure out a stable connection for a playoffs special or something.

Follow LowkiSapfoot on twitch to watch live broadcasts, someday, again, maybe!

Week 12 Scoreboard:

LK (7-3) @ ELD (4-6): The SC-leading Lia Kompos Pumas went to Elderwood to play the Archers on Thursday. The Archers have been struggling and have lost their starting QB, but they were only 1 game out of the playoffs coming into Week 12. The teams played a back-and-forth first half, with the Pumas head to halftime with a 17-10 lead. The Archers scored 2 TDs in under a minute in the third quarter to take the lead; one coming on a Derek Alvarrdo pass to FB Lee Gorgas after a steady drive, the second coming on a strip Sack by Archers SS Charles Karvaja. Karvaja recovered the ball and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-17, Elderwood. Another fumble in Pumas territory by Pumas RB Leonard Bryant led to another Archers TD to make it 31-17 to start the fourth quarter. The Archers added 2 more TDs to turn it into a blowout, including a 21-yard TD run by Gorgas. QB John Parva was once again great for Lia Kompos, but the Pumas couldn’t overcome the Archers running game, which combined for 133 yards. Elderwood LB Dallas Amalla was crucial in the win, forcing a record 3 fumbles, one of which he recovered himself. The Archers stay alive in the hunt for the second spot in the NC Championship, while this Pumas loss keeps the top spot in the SC open with 2+ weeks to go. Final: ELD 45, LK 24.

TS (5-5) @ SAL (4-6): Tiny Sea’s crosstown rivals met for the second time this season, with playoff implications riding on the game. The Tiny Sea Titans came into Week 12 in second place in the NC, but the Brothers had won 4 of their last 5, just a game behind them. The Titans won the first match-up against Salvation, 35-31 in a thriller in which the Brothers lost their starting QB William Maya for the year. This game was another thriller. Titans DE Richard Nolan forced a fumble on a sack of Brothers QB Terry Odom to set up a TD pass from Robert Calabrese to WR Alan Donnell to put the Titans up 6-0 after a missed XP. Calabrese threw another 22-yard pass to WR Abraham Pekerez to put the Titans up 13-3. Both defenses played strong in the second and third quarters, allowing just a field goal each. A pair of unnecessary roughness penalties on Titans FS Troy Hunt led to a 6-yard rushing TD by Pete Burdette to make it 19-13. The Brothers defense forced a 3-and-out and Odom led a 5-play, 55-yard drive, including a 42-yard pass to R Carey to set up a 6-yard TD pas to the same man. The XP put the Brothers on top, 20-19. The Brothers defense once again forced a punt and held onto the ball for the final 2:09 to get the win. Titans head coach Donald Kruse said after the game: “You hate to see it come down to a missed extra point like that, but we had plenty of opportunities and the Brothers outplayed us. My hat’s off to them.” The win brings the Brothers into a 3-way tie for the second spot in the NC Championship, which could become a 4-way tie pending the outcome of the Travelers’ game against Taawa. Final: SAL 20, TS 19.

PLA (4-6) @ DEL (5-5): Platte came into Week 12 off of a tough loss in Green Rock, but the Cragsmen played the Delle Chaparrals with a chance to put themselves in the second SC playoff spot with two weeks to go. This game was a barn-burner, with QBs Alvin Crane (PLA) and Hubert Aguirre (DEL) trading big plays all day. Running backs also had a big day, with Delle’s RB Robert Lavender rushing for 156 yards including a 62-yard TD, while teammate RB Lorenzo Hart had 62 yards and 2 TDs of his own. For Platte, RB Adam Bradshaw picked up a staggering 159 yards and 3 TDs on only 12 carries (13.2 AVG). The biggest story of the day was Hubert Aguirre who dominated the Cragsmen defense with 400 yards passing and 4 TDs. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 28. The Chaparrals exploded for 3 TDs in the quarter to secure a 49-35 win at home and hold on to a playoff spot with two weeks to go. A crucial fumble by Cragsmen WR Richard Apodaka while trailing by 7 points turned the momentum starkly toward the Chaps. The win puts Delle just a game behind Lia Kompos for the top spot in the SC. Final: DEL 49, PLA 35.

PC (4-6) @ TAA (4-6): The Plains City Travelers and the Taawa Jackals were two teams desperately trying to stay alive coming into week 12. The Travelers had just suffered a tough loss to the Archers, while the Jackals were losers of 5 straight after a promising 4-1 start. The Travelers visited the Jackals at Sapfoot Stadium West. The Jackals have some of the UPFF’s rowdiest fans, and the Travelers (despite their moniker) had yet to win a road game. Jackals RB Dale Moulin was the story of this game. He had 180 yards rushing on 19 attempts, scoring 2 TDs. The Jackals defense held Travelers star RB David Samaniega to just 17 yards on 13 carries. Taawa’s defense was tremendous, holding Plains City to just 182 yards on offense and zero second-half points, while the Jackals offense put up 416 total yards. The win keeps the Jackals alive in the playoff race, while the Travelers now share the league’s worst record. Final: TAA 30, PC 14 .

PLA (4-5) @ GR (3-6): The Northsouth Athletics had already clinched the top spot in the NC coming into Week 12. The Green Rock Warriors came into Monday night’s game 1.5 games back of the Chaps for the second SC playoff spot, riding high after their dramatic win over Platte and hoping to keep their season alive against the league’s top team. The Warriors led for about ten minutes during the second quarter after a go-ahead TD pass from QB William Kastaneda to WR Virgil Rutledge. A’s QB Branden Warren answered with a pair of TD passes, including a 60-yarder to WR Ilias Larue to put Northsouth on top 21-10 at halftime. Kastaneda completed a 34-yard TD pass to WR Joseph Setello to bring the Warriors within a touchdown, but a fumble by WR Anton Favsto, forced and recovered by Northsouth CB Jonathan Hoalohanani’i with 1:25 to go, put the Warriors on ice and gave the A’s their 10th win. Final: NOR 28, GR 20.

News:

  • The Northsouth A’s are the only team that has clinched a playoff spot. They will have home field advantage in the NC Championship. With two weeks to go in the Regular Season, every other team in the league remains eligible for one of the three remaining playoff spots. A three-way tie for second in the NC between Elderwood, Tiny Sea, and Salvation will make for an exciting race over the next two weeks.
  • Tiny Sea QB Robert Calabrese is the odds-on favorite for league MVP, but he had this to say when asked about his feelings on the MVP award: “The only award we care about around here is that Pennington Cup. I know I’m handsome and I throw a nice spiral. The Cup is the only girl for me, though.”
  • This week, Salvation RB Milo Whaley became the first UPFF player to break 1,000 yards rushing in a season. He leads the league at 1,047 yards with two weeks to go.
  • The Archers have fought their way back to a chance at the NC Championship under backup QB Derek Alvarrdo, but Alvarrdo is “questionable” in Week 13 against the Travelers with a jammed finger on his throwing hand.
  • Platte SS Joey Ferrusqua missed this week’s game with a broken finger, and he is “doubtful” for Week 13 against Green Rock.
  • The Northsouth Athletics have the league’s top defense and top record, but that defense is facing a wave of injuries coming out of Week 12. On top of CB Damon Francis’s season-ending torn quad, FS Roy Gilles is done for the year with a broken wrist, and LB Taylor Maldonado is out for 1-2 weeks with a hyper extended knee. SS Richard Guy (knee) and CB Jonathan Hoalohanani’i (blurred vision) are both “probable” for Week 13.
  • Titans RB John Olivares remains “questionable” with a deep thigh bruise. He has been out of action since Week 9.
