1932-33 UPFF: Week 8

October 25, 1932

RB Adam Bradshaw of the Platte Cragsmen is Offensive Player of the Week for Week 8. Bradshaw exploded for 169 yards on 9 attempts (18.8 AVG) and 3 TDs in Platte’s victory over the Archers.

Delle Chaparrals CB Jerry Quintanaka is this week’s Defensive Player of the Week. He finished with 8 tackles and had a 52-yard pick-six in the second quarter in a crucial win against the Jackals.

Unfortunately, due to ISP issues, Uplantic Football is back to a blog-only format, indefinitely. The connection just isn’t reliable enough for streaming to work on a regular schedule. I’ll still be doing retro game streams on twitch.tv/lowkisapfoot when the ISP allows for it. Maybe we can figure out a stable connection for a playoffs special or something.

Follow LowkiSapfoot on twitch to watch live broadcasts, someday, again, maybe!

Week 8 Scoreboard:

PLA (2-5) @ ELD (3-3): The Elderwood Archers looked to get back on track against the lowly Platte Cragsmen after two straight losses. A high-scoring affair pitted Platte QB Alvin Crane against Elderwood QB Jerry Pettis. Both quarterbacks were spectacular. Crane completed 52.8% of passes for 296 yards and 3 TDs, while Pettis completed 68.9% for 353 yards and 3 TDs. However, a lone interception by Pettis to Platte FS James Lebon in the third quarter killed a drive and the Archers’ hopes at a comeback as the Cragsmen pulled off another upset of one of the league’s top teams. The Platte running back corps was the big difference in the game. RB Adam Bradshaw dazzled with 169 yards on 9 carries and 3 TDs, while RB Bob Whittaker had 159 yards on 16 attempts and 1 TD. Final: PLA 55, ELD 42.

LK (4-2) @ SAL (2-5): The Lia Kompos Pumas came into Week 8 in first place in the Southern Conference after an instant classic win, facing a 2-5 Salvation Brothers team coming off its second straight win. The game began with bad news for Pumas and starting QB John Parva, who returned to the field this week after missing 3 games with a hernia. After the fifth play of the game, Parva limped off the field with what turned out to be a stress fracture in his foot. He is expected to miss another 1-2 weeks. With second string QB Solomon Brito out with turf toe, it once again fell upon third stringer Brian Berton to lead the Pumas offense. Brothers QB Terry Odom threw an interception midway through the first quarter to set Berton up for a TD pass to give the Pumas a 6-0 lead after the missed XP by K Hicham Gauna. Berton led another scoring drive in the third quarter to give the Pumas a 19-0 lead. Berton finished with 60% completion, 363 yards, 3 TD and 1 INT for a 104.5 passer rating, becoming the hero of the game for Lia Kompos for the second straight week. Final: LK 26, SAL 14.

TAA (4-2) @ DEL (3-3): The Taawa Jackals visited the Delle Chaparrals for the first match-up between the SC contenders this year. Both teams needed a win to keep pace with the Lia Kompos Pumas after their win earlier in the day. Delle jumped ahead early with a TD pass from QB Hubert Aguirre to WR Tony Muriuki, and added to their lead on the next drive on a 52 yard pick-six by CB Jerry Quintanaka. Taawa QB James De La Cruz rebounded to lead the team to a TD and a FG to make the score 14-10, Delle. De La Cruz then sat for the last three minutes of the first half with an undisclosed injury. He returned, seemingly at full strength, in the second half. In his absence, QB James Nakamura led the Jackals to a TD with a 14-yard pass to WR Vagana’a Sanchez to put Taawa on top 17-14. Delle K Christopher Simone nailed a 28-yard FG to tie the game at halftime. The teams then traded field goals in the second half. After a 42-yard FG by Simone to put the Chaps up by 3 with 1:03 remaining, James De La Cruz and the Jackals had another chance to drive and tie it. They ran out of time after a 37-yard pass from De La Cruz to Vagana’a Sanchez brought them down to the Chaps’ 10-yard line. Sanchez was dragged down before he could get out of bounds, and the Jackals were unable to line up and kick a game-tying FG before time expired. The win puts Delle in second place in the SC. Final: DEL 26, TAA 23.

GR (3-4) @ TS (3-4): The Green Rock Warriors traveled to Tiny Sea City to play the Titans. Both teams looked to build on Week 7 wins to get back to .500 on the season. Both quarterbacks threw a pair of TD passes in a busy first quarter. Tiny Sea QB Robert Calabrese threw an interception to Warriors LB Scott Bell to set up a 5-yard TD run by RB Vincent Williams. The Warriors led 24-17 at the half. The Titans came out strong in the second half, tying the game at 27 on a 14-yard pass from Calabrese to WR Abraham Pekerez with 0:56 left in the third quarter. The Titans defense held the Warriors to just 1 first down in the fourth quarter, and the offense came through with 3 more TDs to turn the game into a rare “comeback blowout.” Titans RB Aurelio Nunez was tremendous with 134 yards on 10 carries, including a 49-yard TD run to put the Titans up by 21 with 0:44 left. Calabrese threw 4 TDs and 2 INTs on a 69.2% pass completion rate in the win. Final: TS 48, GR 27.

NOR (5-1) @ PC (3-3): The league’s top team, the Northsouth Athletics, headed to Plains City to take on the Travelers, who were trying to avoid a 4-game skid. In a scoreless game, on the last play of the first quarter, Plains City DE Blaine Bradley hit Travelers QB Phillip Marinna’a hard in the back. Marinna’a did not return, and has been diagnosed with ruptured disc in his spine. His season is over. Backup QB Neal Valentin stepped in for Plains City. After a strong TD drive by QB Branden Warren and the Athletics, Valentin rallied for a TD drive of his own to make the score 7-7 at halftime. The mighty Northsouth defense kept the Travelers out of the end zone in the second half, while a TD pass of 9 yards from Branden Warren to WR Ilias LaRue in the third and a 14-yard FG by Laverne Rikaso in the fourth gave the A’s the win. Warren was 23 of 39 for 269 yards and 2 TD for a 97.1 rating. RB Anthony Gasporra and RB Jake Wood split carries from the backfield for Northsouth and combined for 111 yards from scrimmage. The Athletics improve to 6-1, 2 games in front of the Titans in the NC. The A’s have now defeated each team in the NC. They will play them each once more this season. The Travelers, meanwhile, are reeling after 4 straight losses and the loss of QB Phillip Marinna’a for the season. Final: NOR 17, PC 7.

News:

  • The first place Lia Kompos Pumas have found success thus far through several key injuries. The team will now be without SS Adam Arbucuas will miss 2-4 weeks with a pulled hamstring. Starting QB John Parva is “doubtful” with a foot fracture, and backup QB Solomon Brito is “questionable” with turf toe. However, third string QB Brian Berton has been fantastic after checking in to the Pumas’ last two games. He has a 117.5 passer rating and two wins. With starting C Fomai’i Apodaka out for at least a month with a sprained ankle, the Pumas received the good news that backup C Fred Mava’s finger is only jammed, not broken or dislocated. Mava is “probable” in Week 9 against the Travelers.
  • Archers DT Caleb Suarez (broken finger) is still listed as “questionable” entering Week 9 with a huge game looming against the red-hot Athletics. The Archers defense has given up huge point totals the last two weeks with Suarez out.
  • The Plains City Travelers have lost 4 straight games after their strong start to the year, and now they have lost starting QB Phillip Marinna’a for the season with a ruptured disc in his back. He’s thrown for 1299 yards, 11 TDs, and 3 INTs this year. Neal Valentin will become the starter as the Travelers try to salvage their season.
  • Platte RB Bob Whittaker broke his finger in his great 159-yard performance against Elderwood this week. He is listed as “questionable” for Week 9 against the Chaparrals.
  • Salvation Brothers CB John Espinoza is “probable” in Week 9 with turf toe. Espinoza has 2 INTs this year. He played this against the Pumas, but was not 100%.
  • Titans TE James Kasteano (sprained wrist) will miss at least one more week.
