1932-33 UPFF: Week 6

October 11, 1932

Delle Chaparrals QB Hubert Aguirre is Week 6’s Player of the Week on offense. He was 23 for 31 with 3 TD and 356 yards passing in Delle’s win over Green Rock on Monday night.

Defensive Player of the Week: Taawa Jackals CB Gregory Viagomez had 10 tackles and a 49-yard pick-six in the Jackals’ tight win over Elderwood.

Unfortunately, due to ISP issues, Uplantic Football is back to a blog-only format, indefinitely. The connection just isn’t reliable enough for streaming to work on a regular schedule. I’ll still be doing retro game streams on twitch.tv/lowkisapfoot when the ISP allows for it. Maybe we can figure out a stable connection for a playoffs special or something.

Follow LowkiSapfoot on twitch to watch live broadcasts, someday, again, maybe!

Week 6 Scoreboard:

TAA (3-1) @ ELD (3-1): Thursday night gave us a big cross-conference match-up between the 3-1 Taawa Jackals and the 3-1 Elderwood Archers, in Elderwood. It was a hard-fought game befitting of Week 6’s “Game of the Week” designation. The Jackals enjoyed a 21-0 third quarter to enter the fourth with a 28-13 lead. The Archers mounted a comeback, tying the game at 31 with 1:42 to go, but with all three timeouts, Jackals QB James De La Cruz was able to mount a late drive to win the game on a field goal by K Derick Polk. The Archers were ultimately unable to overcome 4 turnovers in the game, including 3 interceptions by QB Jerry Pettis and a fumble by WR Curtis Olveira. One of Pettis’s INTs was returned 49 yards for a TD by CB Gregory Viagomez. The Jackals also sacked Pettis 5 times in the win. Final: TAA 34, ELD 31.

TS (2-3) @ NOR (3-1): The Tiny Sea Titans visited the Northsouth Athletics. The Athletics welcomed starting QB Branden Warren back to the lineup against the Titans’ early MVP candidate QB Robert Calabrese. Both QBs had their worst performances of the season. Calabrese went 24 for 47 and gave up 2 INTs, while Warren was 13 for 30 with 1 TD and 2 INTs. The wind certainly played a role in the passers’ struggles. It reached speeds of 39 MPH during the game. Robert Calabrese, who threw his first INT of the season last week, gave up a pick-six to Northsouth FS Roy Gilles on the first play from scrimmage. Branden Warren led the Athletics down the field again to end the first quarter with a 14-0 lead. The Northsouth defense kept the Titans out of the end zone in the game, despite the Titans having one of the top offenses in the league coming into this week. Tiny Sea has now lost three straight games. Final: NOR 14, TS 6.

LK (3-1) @ PLA (1-4): The Platte Cragsmen hosted the Lia Kompos Pumas on Sunday. Platte came into the game looking for another big upset after earning their first win of the season in Week 5 against the Travelers. The Pumas needed another win to keep pace with the Jackals in the SC. The stands at the Crag Bowl were much fuller for this game with local fans no doubt inspired after last week’s Cragsmen victory. Pumas QB John Parva (hernia) missed this week again. Back QB Solomon Brito played well with 4 TD passes, but his 2 INTs in the first quarter resulted in 10 Cragsmen points. TE Leo Mayers and WR Henry Salomin each had over 100 yards receiving for the Pumas, but the three-headed backfield monster of RB Bob Whitaker, FB Roy Arroyoka, and RB Adam Bradshaw combined for 164 yards rushing and 5 TDs. The Cragsmen led for most of the game. A 25-yard TD pass from Brito to Mayers brought the Pumas within a touchdown with 8:33 left, but good defense and solid late drives from Platte QB Alvin Crane and the Platte offense put the Pumas on ice. Final: PLA 52, LK 31.

SAL (0-5) @ PC (3-1): The Travelers hosted the Brothers on Sunday night. After a shocking loss last week to the winless Cragsmen, Travelers HC Kanale’e Howes vowed to the media that his team would not take Salvation lightly. The Brothers had a bevy of injuries coming into this game, but came out fighting hard to jump to a 10-0 lead thanks to strong QB play by backup Terry Odom and strong running by RB Milo Whaley. The Travelers battled back in the second quarter to take a 17-14 lead on a trick play pass from RB David Samaniega to QB Phillip Marinna’a for the go-ahead score before halftime. They continued to trade blows in the second half, but the Brothers got the last laugh on a TD pass from Odom to TE John Trejo to seal the win late in the fourth. Both QBs played very well, but Terry Odom out-dueled Phillip Marinna’a, going 17 for 26 for 352 yards and 3 TDs. RB Milo Whaley had 128 yards rushing and a TD on 18 touches as the Brothers rallied for their first franchise win. The Travelers, who started 3-0, have lost their last 2 games, both of which came against winless teams. Final: SAL 31, PC 28.

DEL (2-2) @ GR (2-3): The Delle Chaparrals went on the road to Green Rock for a Monday night game against the Warriors. This game could be an early season turning point for either of these teams, who were both battling in the middle of the SC standings coming into Week 6. The Chaps jumped on top early. QB Hubert Aguirre threw 3 TD passes in the first half, 2 to RB Robert Lavender, including a 49-yarder in the second quarter. They added another in the third on a 31-yard run from Lavender, and Delle led 27-0. Warriors QB William Kastaneda finally threw a pair of TD passes in the fourth quarter, but by then it was too late. A pick-six by Delle FS Robert Monterola sealed the blowout win. The Warriors turned the ball over 5 times in the loss, including 3 INTs and a fumble on a strip sack by Kastaneda, forced and recovered by Delle LB Pablo Foster. Hubert Aguirre was great for the Chaps, going 23 for 31 with 356 yards and 3 TDs in the win. He targeted WR Brian Chavekas for 7 catches and 131 in his return to the lineup, while WR Amarina’a Martin had 6 receptions for 130 yards and a TD. Final: DEL 37, GR 17.

News:

  • With one week to go before the season’s halfway point, the Athletics and Jackals are in control of their respective conferences, but it’s anybody’s guess as to how things will shake out with plenty of football left to be played.
  • Crystalline Casting once again chose not to broadcast UPFF games in Week 6. They have not announced a long-term plan, but many experts believe that we will not see another football game on Crystalline Casting this season. Meanwhile, viewer numbers are through the roof for the Windsor Cup baseball championship series, which will wrap up this week.
  • Tempers flared in the Pumas locker room after their surprise blowout loss to the Cragsmen. An anonymous source reported that players are growing frustrated with teammate Fomai’i Roman (WR), who was apparently benched during the game for undisclosed reasons, but still caused problems in the locker room after the loss. Since the game on Sunday, no known disciplinary action has been taken against Roman by the Pumas team. The Pumas face a tough conference game against the Chaparrals in Week 7.
  • The Northsouth Athletics expect RB Anthony Gasporra (collarbone) back for Week 7’s big match-up against Elderwood for first place in the Northern Conference.
  • Chaparrals FS Lyle Martoyo is expected to return from a pulled hamstring in Week 7 against the Pumas. Chaparrals SS John Barnhill hyper extended his knee in Week 6 against Green Rock. He is listed as “probable” for Week 7.
  • Elderwood Archers DT Caleb Suarez is out for a week or two with a dislocated finger. The Archers OL will be banged up for Week 7 against Northsouth: T Miriyan Hay (hernia) is “doubtful,” C Hobert Alarkon (migraines) is “questionable,” and G Lynn Pollock (broken finger) is “probable.”
  • Green Rock Warriors FS Abe Guzman is expected to return from mononucleosis for Week 7 against Taawa. Warriors DT Marco Tinagero is “questionable” with a bruised cheekbone.
  • Plains City Travelers QB Phillip Marina’a sustained deep bruising in his thigh in the loss to the Brothers. He is listed as “probable” fort Week 7 against Tiny Sea, but his mobility will likely be limited.
  • Salvation Brothers CB John Espinoza is “doubtful” for Week 7 against the Cragsmen. He left Week 6’s win against Plains City with turf toe. Brothers DT Kawaimomona’a Huynh’s broken finger has kept him out the last two weeks, but he is listed as “probable” for Week 7. G Philip Spencer has been out since Week 3 with a scratched cornea. He is still “questionable.”
  • Lia Kompos Pumas QB John Parva is expected back from a sprained knee in Week 7 against Delle. Pumas fans hope Parva’s presence can bring cohesion to a team whose locker room is reportedly not getting along after a disastrous loss in Platte.
  • Taawa Jackals G Oola’a Richards is “doubtful” for Week 7 with a stress fracture in his foot. His blocking was an integral part of the Jackals’ big win over Green Rock in Week 5.
  • Tiny Sea Titans LB Renaldo Scribner is still experiencing blurred vision, but expects to play in Week 7 against the Travelers.
