Weekly Report: June 15, 1931

The Deerborn White Sox looked to keep their unbeaten streak going in the UA’s second week of play. They faced a tough week with a series in Delle and a series at home against Roland.

UA News:

6/8:

  • Trail Blazers LHP Bill Engleman strikes out 9 in the first game of this year’s River Rivalry in Prissley, but the Rivals win on the strength of a 6-run 8th inning. Final: RAI 9, PRI 6.
  • RHP Pancho Romo throws 7.2 1-hit innings for the Brothers as they go on to beat the Bears, 2-1, on Curt Lawson’s walk-off home run, his 5th of the year.
  • Stars RF Antonio Teakowa stays hot with a double and 2 HR for 6 RBI as Delle hands the White Sox their first loss of the season, 9-2.

6/9:

  • Railey starter George Webb strikes out 8 in 6 scoreless innings. LF Julio Kastro’s 1st HR of the year lifts the Rivals over the Trail Blazers, 5-3.
  • Jorge Takato gives the White Sox 7 innings of 1-run ball, but the Stars walk off in the 14th on RHP Francisco Terawaa’s RBI single to take a second straight win from Deerborn. Final: DEL 2, DEE 1 (14 inn.)
  • Stags 1B Francisco Kosgei hits 2 home runs, but the Miners win in Roland, 5-4.
  • RHP James Beach allows just 1 hit in 6.1 scoreless innings as Northsouth takes down Taawa, 3-0.

6/10:

  • Platte RHP Adam Evans strikes out 10, but the Brothers beat the Bears, 5-1. The sweep puts the Bears record at 3-7, near the bottom of the UA. Salvation, meanwhile, share baseball’s best record early on, at 8-2. They have won 6 in a row.
  • Prissley 2B Lorenzo Dokominguez hits 2 home runs for 4 RBI as the Trail Blazers avoid the sweep, beating the Rivals 8-6.
  • Ramon Zuniga’s pinch-hit grand slam helps the Stags put a 10-2 beating on the Miners. Zuniga leads the UA with 7 HR in this young season.
  • The Guardians improve to 7-3, sweeping Taawa with a 5-0 shutout at Trefellen Field in Northsouth.
  • White Sox LF Bob Hove goes 4 for 5 with a double and 2 dingers in Deerborn’s 6-5 win at Delle. The Sox avoid a sweep and keep a 1-game lead in the East.

6/11:

  • White Sox RF Curt Sawyer achieves a hat trick with 3 HR and all 4 of Deerborn’s RBI in their 4-2 win over the Stags. Ramon Zuniga also homers in the game. Sawyer and Zuniga are tied atop the UA with 8 HR each.
  • Chargers 3B Ted Sharpe’s 2 HR performance helps propel Taawa past Salvation, 4-1.
  • The Miners rally after a 15-minute rain delay at the top of the 9th inning. Lia Kompos wins the comeback, 5-4.

6/12:

  • Stags LF Jose Lia Tinta’s 2 HR and 5 RBI take Roland to a 7-0 win to even the series with Deerborn. RHP Gabe Kefentse gives the Stags 6 scoreless innings with just 2 hits in the win. SP Ed Mercier comes on in relief for the Stags and leaves with a strained bicep. Hi will miss 5-6 weeks. The White Sox and Stags will play the rubber match tomorrow at Kostinsky Park.
  • RHP Jon Roberston allows just 4 hits in 7 innings with 0 ER. Salvation beats Taawa, 4-2.
  • Miners 3B Hichem Colle walks it off with an 11th inning solo shot to give Lia Kompos a 6-5 win over the Rivals.
  • Stars slugging RF Antonio Teakowa leaves the game favoring his upper body after making a throw from the outfield in the Stars’ 10-6 win at Redwood. Teakowa awaits a diagnosis.

6/13:

  • The Stars take 2 of 3 at Redwood, winning today, 6-4. Victor Thabet has 3 doubles and German Willis pitches 7.1 solid innings, but Delle beats up on Woods and Gaillaird out of the Redwood bullpen for the win.
  • RHP Kevin Gomez pitches 5 scoreless innings with only 2 hits in Deerborn’s 5-0 win over Roland. The White Sox take 2 of 3 in the series to retain baseball’s top record at 10-3.
  • Herders 1B Ralph August goes deep for the third straight day, racking up 2 home runs today as Cherricaw takes down Northsouth, 7-2. Cherricaw speedster Ed DeMent is a bit banged up in a collision at 2nd base. He is day-to-day with a swollen elbow.
  • Taawa takes 2 of 3 from Salvation, winning today, 5-4. Brothers CF Howard Tenney strains his back making a throw. His is expected to be day-to-day for the next week.
  • The Trail Blazers put up 5 runs in the 10th on Bears RHP Juan Kutakoto. Prissley wins, 6-1. Blazers 1B Bob Gunther has 2 HR in the win. Platte starter Craig Ogg leaves in the 3rd inning with a sore shoulder, but is expected to make his next start.

6/14:

  • Delle RF Antonio Teakowa has been diagnosed with a pulled abdominal muscle. The Stars’ top hitter has not played since sustaining the injury on Friday, and is expected to be day-to-day for the next 5 days.

NPL Watch:

  • Closer Alan Dupond re-signs with Trimble for 1 year. (6/9)
  • After being released by Salvation last week, RHP Harvey Minahan is back in the NPL after signing a 2-year deal today with the Tiny Sea Metros. (6/13)
  • After a short stint with the Brothers, 35-year old LHP Dan Knox is back in the NPL, joining the Canaries. Knox is still considered among expert scouts as one of baseball’s best relievers. It’s somewhat of a mystery that he’s never caught on anywhere. The Canaries hope he will help them claim a second NPL championship. (6/14)
