Weekly Report: August 25, 1930

This week was rife with injuries to contending teams. The Rivals were further limited by various ailments, but they remain in the thick of the Wild Card race. The Brothers also lost some key players this week as they continue to fight for a playoff spot.

Salvation faced tough series against the White Sox and Rivals this week as they battled to maintain a lead in the Wild Card race.

Roland took on Deerborn and started a series with Salvation in games with major playoff race implications.

In the NPL, the Lakers, Carp, and Canaries are in a vicious battle for first place with the Metros lurking not-so-far behind.

UA News:

8/18:

  • A tough day in Railey: Rivals RHP Mark Lia Yorino leaves today’s game complaining of elbow pain. His reliever, LHP Jeffrey Irvin, also leaves with an injury to his throwing arm. Both injuries await official diagnosis. Rivals 2B Tim Rogers is also injured in the game as a result of a collision at second base. He has a back strain, which may limit his action over the next couple weeks, although he is listed as day-to-day. The Rivals lose the game to the Herders, 5-4.
  • Stags LHP Salim Mujer allows just 1 run on 3 hits in 8 innings while striking out 7. Jorge Akil hit’s his 29th home run. Roland beats the Owls, 5-1.
  • The Bears beat the Chargers, 7-3, and are the first team this year to reach 50 wins.
  • Brothers CF Andy Thompson sprains his right knee while running the bases in Salvation’s 8-3 loss to the White Sox. The injury-prone Thompson has missed most of this season with a sprain to his other knee. He is expected to return to full form in about 3 weeks, when just over 1 week of the Regular Season will remain.

8/19:

  • Bears 3B Juan Tokorres has a 4 for 5 day with a double and his 20th home run of the year as Platte stomps Taawa, 8-1.
  • White Sox RF Curt Sawyer hits his 28th HR, teammates Hove, Ogg, and Oko all go deep and each now has 20+ HRs. The White Sox have 133 home runs this year, the most of any team in the league. Deerborn beats Salvation again, 11-1. Mathew Huertata strikes out 11 Brothers in 7 innings for the win. He is now 10-0 on the year.
  • A number of big-name injuries in today’s Brothers-White Sox game: Brothers CL Fernando Varkas will miss the rest of the season after leaving the game with what turns out to be bone chips. He will require surgery, but should return for next season, although he will be a free agent after this year. Varkas has had a great season with 19 saves and 51 Ks with a 2.03 ERA. Brothers CF Andy Thompson adds back spasms to his list of injuries, but is still listed as day-to-day. Despite his ailments, Thompson has hit in 13 straight games. It appears Brothers reliever Paco Pineda will also miss time with an apparent elbow injury, but we await official diagnosis. White Sox RF Curt Sawyer comes out of the game with groin soreness, but the injury is not major.

8/20:

  • Stags RF Albert Pentana hits his 25th dinger, but the Stags drop 2 of 3 to Redwood. Final: RW 6, ROL 5.
  • Northsouth SP James Beach will likely miss time with a shoulder injury after leaving today’s game after 4 innings. The Guardians go on to win in 12 innings, 8-7. Northsouth has won 4 in a row and is just 5 games out of a playoff spot.
  • Bears 3B Juan Tokorres homers for the second straight game as Platte sweeps Taawa, winning today, 4-3.
  • Bob Hove and Rygh Ogg each homer for the 2nd game in a row as the White Sox sweep Salvation in Tiny Sea. Final: DEE 6, SAL 3. Deerborn remains 2 games behind the Bears for the league’s top record.

8/21:

  • More bad news on the injury front for Railey: Rivals starter Mark Lia Yorino will miss at least a full calendar year with a damaged elbow ligament that will require surgery. This a tough blow to the Rivals, who are currently just a game out of the Wild Card spot despite a roster that has been severely impacted by injuries.
  • The Stags take game 1 of 3 from Deerborn, 8-4.
  • Herders CF Ed DeMent has a big 5 for 5 day to tie the UA record with 5 hits. He racks up 4 RBI in Cherricaw’s 8-6 win over Prissley.
  • Brothers CF Howard Tenney hits his 23rd HR in the Brothers’ 5-2 win at Railey.
  • The Guardians win their 5th in a row, beating Delle on the road, 9-5. The Guardians now have a .500 record at 37-37.
  • Bears 3B Juan Tokorres hits his 4th HR in 3 days. Bears SP Julio Martinezto allows just 3 hits and 1 run over 7 innings. The Bears beat the Miners, 7-1, to win their 4th in a row.

8/22:

  • Another harsh blow to the Salvation roster: RP Paco Pineda will miss 10 months with a torn ligament in his elbow. The 36-year old pitcher will be a free agent this offseason. Pineda is a team leader out of the bullpen who the Brothers will miss down the stretch.
  • LHP Juan Rosa makes his first start for Salvation since 1928. He is called up to the active roster from the reserves and delivers with an 8.2 inning performance. He allows just 1 earned run on 6 hits as Salvation beats Railey, 7-1.
  • Deerborn RHP Roberto Tokorres strikes out 10 in 6 innings as the White Sox stomp the Stags, 9-1. Rygh Ogg and Jorge Oko each hit their 23rd HR for Deerborn, and Ramon Zuniga gets his 22nd for Roland in the loss. The Stags fall a game behind Salvation in the Wild Card race.
  • The Stars blank the Guardians, 10-0, to end Northsouth’s 5-game win streak. With the win, Delle stays 2 games behind Salvation in the Wild Card race.
  • Owls RF Jorge Akil is 3 for 3 with a triple and a home run. He drives in all 3 runs in Redwood’s 3-1 win over Taawa. He leads the league with 30 HR. With the loss, the Chargers are the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention. They are 17-58 so far, their worst of 3 bad seasons in the UA.

8/23:

  • The Brothers pick up a relief pitcher to help their ailing squad down the final stretch. In a trade with the NPL’s Spiders, Salvation receives veteran reliever Dan Knox in exchange for two prospects: 3B Van Ogg and LHP Leonard Sieber.
  • Salvation RHP Pancho Romo gives up just 1 run in 8 innings as the Brothers sweep the Rivals. Final: SAL 3, RAI 1. Brothers CF Andy Thompson was absent from the lineup for the 4th straight game with a sprained knee, although he remains off the injured list.
  • Roland takes the rubber match in Deerborn, 8-4. Stags RF Albert Pentana hits his 26th HR plus a double in a 4 for 5, 4 RBI day. Deerborn teammates Rygh Ogg and Jorge Oko both homer in back-to-back games. The Stags are a game behind Salvation in the Wild Card race.
  • Juan Tumaini hits his 20th and 21st home runs, but the Trail Blazers fall to Cherricaw, 5-4.
  • The Stars take 2 of 3 from the Guardians, winning today, 7-5. Delle remains 2 games behind Salvation for the Wild Card.

8/24:

  • Northsouth SP James Beach learns today that his season is over after sustaining what turned out to be a torn labrum on Wednesday. He will return for Spring Training next season.
  • Rivals LF Julio Kastro hits his 29th HR, but Railey falls to Prissley, 7-1, in the first game of the final 3-game series of this year’s River Rivalry.
  • Delle knocks off Platte in extra innings, 4-3, thanks to C Jon Garcika’s go-ahead solo shot in the top of the 10th. The Stars are a game behind in the Wild Card race.
  • Miners CF Winston Moon drives in 6 runs as Lia Kompos puts up a ton of offense in a 16-3 trouncing of Redwood.
  • White Sox 1B Jorge Oko homers in his third straight game for his 25th of the year as Deerborn beats Taawa, 3-2. With the win, Deerborn gains a game on Platte and now trails them by 2 games for the UA’s top record.
  • Stags LHP Rich Smith strikes out 8 in 6 IP as Roland takes down to Salvation in Tiny Sea to tie them in the Wild Card race. Thompson remains out of the lineup for the banged-up Brothers.

  • RHP Ed Austin give the Reapers 8.2 innings of 1-run ball while striking out 11 as Plains City pounds Petchon, 12-1. (8/18)
  • Kings 3B Dean Payne hits his 16th HR, but teammate Luis Rokodriguez hits 2 to take the lead over Payne for the NPL lead with 17. Rokodriguez’s 2nd knock is a walk-off solo sho tin the 10th. Final: Kings 5, Metros 4. (8/18)
  • Lakers 2B Faycal Boutin hits 2 doubles and a home run in a 4 for 5 day with 4 RBI. Elderwood beats Wight, 13-12. The game features 8 home runs between the two teams. (8/19)
  • RHP Julio Lia Undun gives the Metros 5 perfect innings in their 5-0 win over Trimble. Tiny Sea pitching holds the Toppers to just 2 hits in the game. (8/19)
  • LHP Javier Rosaritoko allows just 2 hits and 0 runs in 6.1 innings as the Carp take game 1 at home in a big series against the first-place Canaries. The Carp can regain the NPL’s top spot with a sweep. (8/19)
  • Kings 3B Dean Payne’s power barrage continues. He hits his 6 HR in his last 7 games as Lia Puedris beats Plains City, 6-5. Payne and teammate Luis Rokodriguez are tied for the NPL HR lead with 17 each. (8/20)
  • Carp 3B Fure Len has a double and a home run for 3 RBI as the Carp beat Carver again, 5-2. The winner of tomorrow’s series finale in Petchon will be alone in first place. (8/20)
  • Elderwood 1B Juan Adili hits his 15th and 16th homers in the Lakers’ 12-4 win over Wight. The Lakers are just a game out of first with the win. (8/21)
  • LHP Morgan Burnett allows just 1 run in 6.2 innings as Carver avoids the sweep in Petchon and keeps their first-place status, leading both Petchon and Elderwood by 1 game in the standings. (8/21)
  • Elderwood looks to beef up their bullpen during the pennant race, acquiring 30-year old reliever Bruno McKenna from the UA’s Chargers in exchange for infield prospect Felipe Keleuljang. (8/22)
  • Spiders CF Jim Ellison hits a pair of home runs in Wight’s 6-3 victory at Tiny Sea. (8/23)
  • The Lakers beat the Canaries, 6-5, in the first of a 3-game series in Elderwood. With the win, red-hot Elderwood moves into a tie for first with Carver. (8/23)
  • Kings 1B Luis Rokodriguez hits his league-leading 18th HR as Lia Puedris knocks off Petchon, 8-7. The Carp fall a game behind first place with the loss. (8/23)
  • Spiders LHP Mark Flower allows just 1 hit in 6.2 innings and 1B Lier Semb’s 3-run home run is the difference in Wight’s 3-0 win at Tiny Sea. (8/24)
  • Toppers RHP Marius Leleu pitches 7 innings allows just 2 hits for 1 run on Abbot’s solo shot as Trimble beats Plains City, 5-3. (8/24)
  • RHP Donald Butler strikes out 6 in 5 innings as Elderwood beats Carver, 5-3, to take sole possession of first place in the NPL with 19 games remaining in the season. The win is the Lakers’ 9th in a row. (8/24)
  • 37-year old LHP Troy Miller gives the Carp 8.1 innings, strikes out 7, and allows just 3 hits as the Carp shout out the Kings, 8-0. C Howard Gross hits 2 HR for 5 RBI. With the win, Petchon is just a game behind the first-place Lakers. (8/24)
