Weekly Report: August 18, 1930

The Platte Bears faced a tough week with series against top contenders Deerborn and Roland as they attempted to hold on to the UA’s best record.

The Stars and Rivals played a big series in Delle as Wild Card contenders continue to jockey for position heading into the final month of the Regular Season.

In the NPL, Lakers SP Paul Stewart fired off 2 complete game wins this week.

UA News:

8/11:

  • The White Sox take game 1, 6-5, from the Bears in a big 3-game series that could put the White Sox into the league’s top spot with a sweep.
  • Kevin Leroux strikes out 10 in 7.1 scoreless innings and gives up just 2 hits in Delle’s 5-0 win at Cherricaw.

8/12:

  • The Bears win game 2 in Deerborn in the battle atop the UA standings. The Bears and White Sox play the rubber match tomorrow. Final: PLA 4, DEE 2.
  • LHP Salim Mujer strikes out 9 in 8 IP as the Stags beat the Guardians, 2-1.
  • Despite an 8 inning, 3-hit, 9 K performance from RHP Stanley Quinn, the Stars lose to the Herders on Wassim Quille’s pinch-hit walk-off solo shot in the 9th. Final: CHE 1, DEL 0.
  • Owls LF Ambroise Forestier hits his 18th HR as Redwood stomps the Brothers, 10-1. With the loss, the Brothers are now tied with the Stags at the top of the Wild Card standings.

8/13:

  • The Stags sweep the Guardians, winning today’s game 6-1. RHP Jose Verdier goes 7 IP with just 3 hits and 7 Ks and Ramon Zuniga hits his 20th HR in the win. Roland moves into the lead in the Wild Card race with the win, a game ahead of Delle and Salvation.
  • White Sox LF Bob Hove hits a pair of doubles and his 24th home run as Deerborn beats Platte, 5-3, to take 2 of 3 in the series. The Bears remain 1 game ahead of the Sox for the league’s best record with just a over a month to go.
  • Redwood RF Jorge Akil smashes homers number 27 and 28 to tie Julio Kastro for the league lead. The Owls beat Salvation, 12-5.
  • Rivals RHP Arturo Kolon strikes out 9 batters in 6 innings, but Lia Kompos beats them, 5-2.

8/14:

  • Stags LF Jose Lia Tinta hits his 23rd home run, but the Bears take game 1 of the series in Platte, 8-3.
  • White Sox SS Daniel Lia Yorino smacks 2 long balls as Deerborn beats Redwood, 10-5.
  • Rivals RHP Noa Dutertre strikes out 7 in 7 innings as Railey takes game 1 at Delle, 2-1, in a big series between the two Wild Card contenders.

8/15:

  • Brothers RHP John George leaves after 2 innings with arm soreness. It seems the injury might be somewhat serious, as he is awaiting a diagnosis. Salvation beats Cherricaw, 10-4.
  • The Rivals take another game from the Stars, 8-3, and both teams are now 2 games behind Salvation in the Wild Card race.
  • The Bears beat the Stags on C Eloi Rousset’s walk-off home run in the 10th, 3-2. Platte CF Andy Bernard draws 4 walks in the game.
  • Owls LF Ambroise Forestier bruises his knee on a diving play and has to leave the game in Redwood’s 7-4 victory over the White Sox. Forestier is day-to-day, and may miss time over the next week or two.

8/16:

  • Salvation beats Cherricaw, 4-1, sweeping the series on the road and maintaining their narrow lead in the Wild Card race.
  • The Stars beat the Rivals, 3-2 to avoid being swept at home. The Stars are 2 games behind the Brothers in the Wild Card race.
  • Stags RF Albert Pentana hits his 24th HR of the year as Roland avoids the sweep at Platte, winning 7-4. The Stags trail the Brothers by just 1 game in the Wild Card race.
  • Owls 2B Victor Thabet hits 2 HR and RHP Manny Vazquiza strikes out 7 in 7.1 innings as the Owls take 2 of 3 from the White Sox, winning 5-3 today.
  • The league’s leader in batting average, Miners 2B Jose Meza, sprains his ankle in Lia Kompos’s 9-4 loss to Prissley. He is day-to-day, probably for the next week or so.

8/17:

  • Brothers starter John George learns today that the injury he sustained Friday night is a torn tendon in his elbow. His season is over, and his recovery time may extend deep into the 1931 season. Devastating news for George. Salvation is down a another starter, with Albert Gacoki also out for the year.

  • RHP Paul Stewart goes the distance for Elderwood, allowing just 4 hits in 9 innings of shutout ball as the Lakers beat the Reapers, 3-0. (8/11)
  • LHP Fabio Mora signs a big 4-year deal with the Spiders after being released by the Stags in July. He joins a talented starting rotation in Wight as the Spiders try to move up the standings in the NPL’s second half. (8/12)
  • Elderwood C George Cool learns he is out for the season after suffering a severe hamstring strain on August 10 against Plains City. (8/12)
  • Petchon beats Tiny Sea, 3-2, avoiding the sweep and taking a 1-game lead over the Canaries atop the NPL. The Metros are in third place, 2 games behind the Carp. (8/12)
  • Kings 1B Luis Rokodriguez hits home runs number 13 and 14 to take the NPL lead, and James Evans goes 6.1 scoreless innings in Lia Puedris’s 4-1 win at Carver. (8/12)
  • Fabio Mora leaves in the 2nd inning of his NPL debut with an apparently serious injury to his shoulder, the same day he signed with Wight. Spiders 1B Lier Semb hits 2 HR in his first game back from his suspension for fighting. Wight beats Trimble, 6-0. Mora will likely miss the season with what team doctors are calling “severe shoulder inflammation.” (8/12)
  • Wight 1B Lier Semb has his 2nd 2-HR game in a row, and teammate Eric Maddox smacks 2 HR and a double for 7 RBI. The Spiders beat the Carp in a barn-burner, 15-10. With Carver’s 4-1 win at Trimble, the Carp and Canaries are now tied for first place. (8/13)
  • Elderwood 1B Blake Mercier tears a ligament in his thumb in a collision at 1st base in the Lakers’ 8-4 loss to the Kings. He is expected to miss the remainder of the season. (8/14)
  • Wight 1B Lier Semb cracks his 5th homer in his last 3 games, his 13th of the year, as Wight beats Petchon, 5-3. With their 4-1 win over the Toppers, the Canaries are now alone in first place.(8/14)
  • The Carp receive LHP Albert Gerro from the Reapers in exchange for prospect RHP Randy Muller. Gerro has been masterful out of the bullpen this season, with a 0.44 ERA in 17 relief appearances for Plains City. (8/15)
  • Carver 1B Bob Jones’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th lifts the Canaries over the Spiders, 5-4. They are alone in first, 1 game in front of the Carp. (8/16)
  • Lakers SP Paul Stewart pitches his 2nd complete game of the year , and his 2nd this week! Elderwood LF Allen Hendrix goes deep twice and is 3 for 5 with 7 RBI, tying the NPL record. Eldwerwood 1B Juan Adili hits his 12th home run in the Lakers 15-2 trouncing of the Toppers. (8/16)
  • Kings 1B Luis Rokodriguez has a big day, going 5 for 5 with a double and a home run, driving in 3. Lia Puedris beats Tiny Sea, 12-7. (8/16)
  • Spiders 1B Lier Semb hits his 14th HR of 1930, but the Canaries win again, 7-5. (8/17)
  • Kings 3B Dean Payne hits his 15th home run, tying teammate Luis Rokodriguez for the league lead, but the Metros beat the Kings, 5-2. (8/17)
