Weekly Report: July 14, 1930

Herders 2B Jeff Brown chased the UA record hit streak this week, and Stags CF Ramon Zuniga became the second player to hit for the cycle.

All-Star voting continues at UA ballparks and nationwide in participating picture houses. The 3rd UA All-Star Game will be held a week from today at Sapfoot Stadium in Taawa. Rosters will be announced this Saturday, July 19.

UA News:

7/7:

  • Stags CF Ramon Zuniga becomes the 2nd UA player to hit for the cycle, going 5 for 6 against the Bears in Roland. Despite Zuniga’s feat, the Stags drop the game to Platte, 8-7, in 11 innings. Bears CF Stan Davis hits 2 home runs with 5 RBI in the win.
  • Stars RF Antonio Teakowa has hit a home run in 3 of 4 games since returning from a torn hamstring. Delle beats Railey, 6-4.
  • White Sox RF Curt Sawyer limps off the field after twisting his knee awkwardly on a play in the outfield. Sawyer is a star defensive player for the Windsor Cup champs, and currently leads the league in home runs. He is day-to-day with a bad knee bruise. The White Sox beat the Owls, 6-3.
  • Herders 2B Jeff Brown hits in his 16th straight game. He takes aim at Jose Lia Tinta’s record 19-game hit streak . The Herders beat the Brothers, 8-5.
  • Brothers 2B Carlos Martinezto continues to struggle with injuries. He is currently nursing a hip flexor strain and wrist tendinitis. He has hit in 6 straight games despite the discomfort.

7/8:

  • Jeff Brown’s hit streak reaches 17 games as the Herders beat the Brothers, 6-5, in 11 innings.
  • Bears SP Travis Voelker could miss up to 6 weeks with recurring back spasms. He leaves after the 1st inning against the Stags.
  • Jose Lia Tinta hits his 13th HR, Albert Pentana hits his 15th, and Francisco Kosgei’s 5th is a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 9th. Roland beats Platte, 6-5.
  • Stars 1B Yassine Joseph hits home runs number 11 and 12 in Delle’s 8-1 thumping of the Rivals.
  • Jorge Takato strikes out 9 in 8 innings, but the Owls hold on to beat the White Sox, 4-3. Jorge Akil hits his 15th HR for Redwood to put them over the top in the 14th inning.

7/9:

  • Rivals SP Sonny Hernankez will likely miss the rest of the year with bone chips in his elbow. He will undergo surgery tomorrow in Railey. The pitcher is expected to be a major star in the UA, but he has been out since Spring Training.
  • Bears CF Stan Davis has his second 2-HR game in three days as the Bears take 2 of 3 from the Stags, winning 8-6 in 12 innings today. Stags CF Albert Pentana homers in his 4th straight game to tie Curt Sawyer for the league home run lead with 16. Stags LF Jose Lia Tinta homers in his 3rd straight game to bring his total to 14.
  • Rivals RF Julio Kastro is 3 for 4 with 4 RBI, hitting his 14th and 15th home runs of the year. RHP Michael Mercier strikes out 10 in the win, 9-2 over Delle.
  • RHP Mathew Huertata strikes out 11 and allows only 3 hits in a complete game shutout of the Owls. Deerborn RF Curt Sawyer hits his league-leading 17th HR. The White Sox win, 4-0.
  • Jeff Brown’s hit streak is at 18 games after he hits a double in Cherricaw’s 6-4 loss to the Brothers. With a hit tomorrow, he will tie Jose Lia Tinta’s record. The Brothers win, 6-3, on Howard Tenney’s walk-off HR.
  • Chargers 1B Bill Newman’s 10th inning walk-off HR gives the lowly Chargers their first back-to-back wins of the year. Final: TAA 4, NOR 3.

7/11:

  • The last-place Chargers beat the first-place Bears, 5-2, for their 3rd win in a row.
  • White Sox RHP pitcher Roberto Tokorres strikes out 9 in 8 IP, allowing only 1 hit, a solo HR to Mike Wilson in the 3rd. Deerborn beats Salvation, 2-1.
  • Jeff Brown ties Jose Lia Tinta’s record hit streak of 19 games. Bill Randall hits 2 HR, including a walk-ff shot in the 11th as the Herders beat Railey, 4-2.
  • Rivals SP Alfredo Hernankez is injured again, leaving with an unspecified injury after throwing only 3 pitches. He awaits a diagnosis.
  • Owls 2B Voctor Thabet hits 2 HR in Redwood’s 7-5 win over Roland.

7/12:

  • Salvation LF Curt Lawson hits 2 HR, but the White Sox beat the Brothers on Bob Hove’s 11th inning walk-off homer, 5-3.
  • Herders 2B Jeff Brown breaks the UA hit streak record! He records 2 singles to extend his streak to 20 games with a hit. The Herders lose to the Rivals, 8-3. Brown’s feat comes on Speakowan Independence Day, adding an extra reason to celebrate to Cherricaw’s biggest holiday of the year, despite the team’s loss.
  • Northsouth 3B Hamid Fischer hits 2 HR and 2B Rogne Sem goes 4 for 4 with a double and a home run. The Guardians stomp the Miners, 10-1.
  • Stags LF Jose Lia Tinta stays hot with his 5th HR in the last 7 games. His season total is now 15. The Stags beat the Owls, 6-3.

7/13:

  • Brothers SP Albert Gacoki will miss the rest of the year with a torn tendon in his elbow, sustained in the July 11 loss to the White Sox. The Brothers are 9 games behind the Bears in the West, but in the thick of the pack in the early wild card race.
  • RHP Ayoub Colin goes 8.1 innings for the White Sox and LF Bob Hove is 3 for 4 with a double, a HR, and 4 RBI, as the White Sox win, 8-2, to sweep the Brothers and retain 1st place in the East.
  • Jeff Brown extends his hit streak to 21 games with 2 doubles in Cherricaw’s 7-4 loss to Railey. Brown now leads the league in batting average at .338.
  • Bears 2B Jonathan Kapkobi leaves with what looks like a serious left knee injury. He awaits a diagnosis. The Bears lose to Taawa, 4-2, but remain far-and-away baseball’s top team at 30-10. The Chargers are baseball’s worst team this year, but have won 5 of their last 7.
  • Albert Pentana hits his 17th HR and Jose Lia Tinta hits his 16th for the Stags. Jorge Akil hits his 16th HR for the Owls, but the Stags romp in Redwood, 7-1.
  • Bad news for Roland: Stags C Carlos Martinezto leaves the Owls game with a torn calf muscle, and he will miss the rest of the year. Felix Kordero will presumably step into the everyday catching role for the Stags as they battle in the East standings.

  • Reapers RF Gary Donovan will miss the rest of the season with a broken elbow. (7/8)
  • Lakers 1B Blake Mercier hits 2 HR, but the Canaries beat the Lakers, 8-6. (7/9)
  • Blake Mercier has his second straight 2-HR game, but the Lakers lose again to Carver, 7-5. (7/10)
  • Plains City SP Julian Rault strikes out 10 in the Reapers’ 4-3 win over Wight. (7/11)
  • Metros 1B Chuck Parker hits 2 HR in Tiny Sea’s 5-2 win over Carver. (7/11)
