Weekly Report: June 16, 1930

The Platte Bears entered the week undefeated, looking to keep the momentum going and put as much distance between themselves and the rest of the league as they can in the early season.

News:

  • A rough day for Deerborn: Two White Sox starting pitchers leave with injuries in the same game. Scheduled starter Roberto Tokorres leaves with an unspecified injury to his throwing hand in the 4th and is relieved by Ayoub Colin, who comes out after 6 pitches with back tightness. Both players are currently listed as day-to-day. The Stags beat the White Sox, 3-0. (6/9)
  • Bears 3B Juan Tokorres hits 2 HR for 4 RBI as Platte runs over the Miners again, 10-3. The Bears remain undefeated at 9-0. (6/9)
  • Owls C Ibrahim Gauthier drives home 6 runs in Redwood’s 10-7 win over Taawa. (6/10)
  • The Stags win, 6-5 in 10 innings, to take 2 of 3 games from the White Sox. (6/10)
  • Brothers SP Jeff Walker strikes out 9 in 7.1 innings, but loses the game to the Rivals, 2-1. Railey starter Diego Kumbuka came out of the game with an elbow injury in the 4th inning, and appeared to be in extreme pain. He will miss the rest of the year with a torn ligament. (6/10)
  • Prissley LF Juan Tumaini hits 2 HR in a 3 for 3 day in the Trail Blazers 13-7 win over the Herders. (6/10)
  • The Miners hand the Bears their first loss of the season, 6-1, in Platte. (6/10)
  • Stags LF Jose Lia Tinta goes deep twice as the Stags beat the Brothers, 11-6, in the first meeting of the two titans this year. (6/11)
  • Cherricaw 3B Lou Fortin goes 5 for 5 with a pair of doubles and 4 RBI as the Herders beat the Guardians, 10-2. (6/11)
  • RHP Alfonso Lopetokaz strikes out 10 Railey batters, but the Trail Blazers lose to their nemeses, 3-1. (6/12)
  • Guardians LHP Wiley Ellysian strikes out 9 in 5 IP, and Northsouth walks off in the 9th on Len Butt’s RBI single. Final: NOR 3, CHE 2. (6/12)
  • The Rivals sweep the Trail Blazers in Prissley and take a 3-0 lead in this year’s fan-dubbed “River Rivalry Series.” (6/13)
  • Bears SP Justin Russell may miss his next start after leaving in the 2nd inning of today’s 6-1 win over Delle. Team doctors are simply calling it a “sore shoulder.” (6/13)
  • Miners 2B Jose Meza is 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and a home run in Lia Kompos’s 8-3 win over Redwood. (6/13)
  • 3B Rygh Ogg hits 2 home runs and LF Jose Tokorres is 3 for 4 with a home run as the White Sox pound the lowly Chargers, 11-1 in Taawa. (6/13)
  • The Brothers beat the Stags, 9-5, taking 2 of 3 games in the first series between the teams this year. (6/13)
  • The Brothers win a pitchers’ duel in Prissley, with CF Howard Tenney’s solo shot in the 6th the only run of the game. Jeff Rogers strikes out 9 in 8 IP for the Trail Blazers, but Jeff Walker gets the win for Salvation with 8 Ks in 8 IP and 0 ER. (6/15)
  • Stags LHP Rich Smith strikes out 11 in 7 scoreless innings and gets the win over Taawa, 3-0. Stags LF Jose Lia Tinta hits 2 HR, both off of Tyrone Lia Puedris. (6/15)
  • Despite a strained hamstring, Bears CF Stan Davis goes 3 for 4 with a pair of long balls in Platte’s 9-2 thumping of the Herders. The Bears are a league-best 12-2 on the year and have outscored opponents by 50 total runs so far. (6/15)

NPL Spring Training Watch:

  • RHP Bruce Brown signs a big 3-year contract with the Reapers. Experts are questioning the signing, as Brown will be 40 years old at the end of his contract, but the team seems confident that he will contribute greatly. He was released by the Northsouth Guardians at the end of UA Spring Training this year. (6/9)
  • Former Platte starter, 41-year old RHP Yassine Ramos, signs a 1-year deal with the Tiny Sea Metros. (6/15)
  • The Lia Puedris Kings have one of the strongest rosters in the NPL, but will have to deal with injuries to key players with the Regular Season two weeks away. SS Roy O’Donoghue is out with forearm tendinitis. His return is uncertain. 2B Samir Devaux is out 3 weeks with a torn ab muscle, and LF Joe Laughlin will miss 4 weeks with a strained hamstring.
