Offseason Report: 1929 UA Awards

October 28, 1929

“The 1929 Uplantic Association awards have been presented. There was some controversy, as Roland’s Albert Pentana won the MVP when we all assumed Delle’s Antonio Teakowa would win the award, as he was just .020 BA points from a batting Triple Crown and tied the league record for home runs. It can’t be justified by pointing out the overall success of the Stags versus the Stars, since Ambroise Forestier won the award last year playing for the league’s worst team and the Stars were one of the last teams to be eliminated from contention this year, so it’s not like they were awful. It seems like Pentana’s pretty smile and fancy suits had a bigger influence on the writers who vote for MVP than Teakowa’s superior statistics and boring personality.” – Michael Grossman, Delle radio host

News:

  • White Sox SP Albert Mendozataka has been out with extreme shoulder inflammation since July 19. He learned today that he will probably be unable to return until around midseason, 1930. (10/7)
  • The Taawa Chargers are under new ownership. After an absolutely dismal 31-69 season, Jorge Olufemi has sold the Chargers to Micah Thurman. Thurman comes from generational wealth in the coal mining industry in Kandelria. In the past Thurman has lobbied the Chargers to use his company’s branding in their promotional materials, which previous ownership declined to do. He has also expressed wishes to sell the rights to the names of pro stadiums and install advertising on the fields, so we may see a new name and look for Sapfoot Stadium in the coming years. Taawa is set to host the All-Star Game in 1930, which could serve as a showcase for new sponsorship deals under Thurman’s ownership. Thurman has stated that he values winning over all else, and that will be the only cure for the Chargers’ waning attendance over the first two seasons. (10/8)
  • Free agents officially declare their availability today, and the offseason signing frenzy begins. (10/28)
  • White Sox sign FA RP Armando Rokodriguez for 2 years. He was great for Roland in 1928, but was released in ’29 by Salvation after pitching only 14.2 innings. (10/28)
