1929 UA Regular Season Comes to a Close

For most of the league, it’s time to pack it in for the year and look forward to another chance next season. But for three talented teams, the chance at a Windsor Cup championship is almost within grasp. Keep reading to find out who is heading to the playoffs, who is heading home ’til next spring, and who is making history at the plate and on the mound as the 1929 season wraps up…

  • Ramon Zuniga hits his 32nd and 33rd home runs and Albert Pentana hits his 31st; Roland takes game 1 in a crucial series against Salvation. Brothers LF Curt Lawson and Stags ace pitcher Rich Smith are ejected in the 3rd inning for igniting a brawl. It’s a bad time of year to let one’s emotions run wild and risk suspension during crucial final games. The players get the standard punishment for fighting: 7 games for pitcher Smith, 3 games for batter Lawson. (9/9)
  • Ralph August hits his 35th HR as the Guardians beat the Herders, 4-1. The Guardians now trail the Brothers by only 2 games in the West. (9/9)
  • Antonio Teakowa hits his 40th HR of the year in the Stars’ 6-5 win in Prissley. (9/10)
  • Stags LF Jose Lia Tinta hits a pair of long balls, but the Brothers bounce back in game 2, 6-5. They’ll play the rubber match at City Center in Tiny Sea tomorrow. (9/10)
  • Ramon Zuniga hits his 34th HR in the Stags’ 9-6 win at Salvation. The Stags take 2 of 3 in the series, and a decisive 7 of 9 in the season series between last year’s Windsor Cup Finals participants. They now hold a 3-game lead over the White Sox in the East and the league’s best record with 6 games to go. (9/11)
  • Juan Tumaini hits a double along with his 31st and 32nd home runs in Prissley’s 8-4 loss to the Stars. Antonio Teakowa hits his 41st HR, just 2 behind Juan Tokorres’s record of 43. The Stars have won 6 in a row, but are on the brink of elimination. (9/11)
  • Rivals SP Alfredo Hernankez will miss the rest of the year with severe forearm inflammation. The injury will keep him away from throwing a baseball for 2-3 months. (9/11)
  • Northsouth sweeps Cherricaw for their 5th straight win. Northsouth gets the win in 10 innings, but Peter Hernankez blows his first save of the season to send the game to extras. His perfect save streak ends at 27. The Guardians are now just 1 game behind the Brothers in the West and 2 games behind Deerborn for the wild card with 6 games left. (9/11)
  • Rivals right-handed starter Noa Dutertre leaves with elbow pain. He is day-to-day awaiting diagnosis. Brothers righty reliever Albert Gacoki also leaves the game clutching his shoulder. Brothers CF Andy Thompson leaves with a sore knee, but looks to be on track for the rest of the season. The Rivals win, 4-1. After 3 straight series losses, Salvation holds a tenuous 1-game lead over Northsouth in the West. (9/13)
  • Stags 2B Ronald Pass drives home Albert Pentana in the bottom of the 12th to take game 1 of 3 against the Guardians. With Deerborn’s loss, the Roland Stags clinch the East division pennant for the second year in a row. (9/13)
  • The Delle Stars are officially eliminated after their 5-2 loss to Platte, who is on the elimination bubble as well. (9/13)
  • White Sox SP Jacob Hudson goes 8 scoreless innings with 11 Ks. Trail Blazers pitching combines for only 2 hits, with starter Fabio Mora striking out 8 in 7.1 innings. Prissley earns the shutout on Deerborn CL Carlos Garcika’s blown save. (9/14)
  • Brothers CF Andy Thompson hits his 25th and 26th home runs as Salvation wins 6-5 in 14 innings over Railey.
  • Jose Lia Tinta hits his 26th and 27th homers of the year and Albert Pentana hits his 32nd in Roland’s 11-2 rout of Northsouth. The Guardians are 2 games behind the Brothers in the West. (9/14)
  • The Platte Bears’ season is over after today’s 3-1 loss to Delle. (9/14)
  • Herders 1B Ralph August blasts 3 home runs for the second time in his career in Cherricaw’s 6-2 win at Lia Kompos. He is at 38 HR on the year, 3 behind Antonio Teakowa for the league lead. (9/14)
  • Taawa 1B Eric Jackson rattles off 5 hits against the Owls in the Chargers’ 6-5, 14-inning win. (9/14)
  • Pedro Kopano walks it off for the Rivals with a 2-run homer in bottom of the 10th. The Brothers drop 2 of 3 to Rivals, losing their 4th straight series. With just 3 games remaining, the Brothers lead the Guardians by 1 game in the West. The Brothers will host Prissley (40-57); Northsouth will host Railey (47-50). (9/15)
  • Deerborn finishes their 5-4 come-from-behind victory against Prissley with Luke Lia Puedris’s walk-off sac fly. They lead Northsouth by 2 games for the wild card spot heading in to the final 3-game series of the year. Northsouth will host Railey (47-50); Deerborn will visit Platte (53-44). (9/15)
  • Antonio Teakowa hits his 42nd home run to help the Stars sink the Chargers in 10 innings, 7-2. Teakowa is now 1 HR from tying Juan Tokorres’s record with 2 games remaining on the schedule. Stars pitcher Kevin Leroux pitched the complete game for the win. (9/16)
  • Bears 3B Juan Tokorres hits 2 HR to bring his total to 36 for the season. The Bears beat the White Sox in 12 innings, 13-11. With the Guardians’ 11-inning win against Railey, they now trail in both the West division and wild card races by only 1 game. (9/16)
  • Deerborn beats Platte, 3-1, clinching the wild card playoff spot. (9/17)
  • Andy Thompson goes 4 for 4 with a double and his 27th home run as the Brothers beat the Trail Blazers, 3-5. With the win, the Brothers clinch their second straight West division pennant. (9/17)
  • Salvation starting 2B Carlos Martinezto will miss the rest of the season with recurring back spasms. Martinezto is reportedly “devastated” that he will miss the playoffs for the Brothers. (9/17)
  • Rivals 1B Pedro Kopano scores four times in Railey’s 11-4 win in Northsouth. Northsouth is eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. (9/17)
  • Stars RF Antonio Teakowa blasts his 43rd home run of the year off of Manuel Davilaka in the 7th inning of Delle’s 6-1 loss tot he Chargers. Despite the loss, the Stars held a private celebration after the game, as Antonio Teakowa now shares Juan Tokorres’s record for home runs in a season with 43. He can become the all-time leader with a HR tomorrow, the last day of the season. (9/17)
  • The playoff field is set. The Roland Stags are regular season champions. They will play in the Windsor Cup Finals against the winner of a SemiFinal Series between the Salvation Brothers and the Deerborn White Sox. (9/17)
  • Andy Thompson goes 1 for 4 in Salvation’s 8-3 loss to Prissley. Thompson finishes the regular season with a 10-game hit streak. (9/18)
  • Brothers right-handed reliever Tony Rodier could miss up to a week with a herniated disc in his back and a badly bruised glove-side hand. He has been a strikeout machine out of the bullpen for Salvation, so they may miss his services if he can’t play in the UA SemiFinal against Deerborn. (9/18)
  • This year’s home run king is Antonio Teakowa. He misses the record, going 1 for 4 with zero home runs and zero RBI today. He finishes tied with Juan Tokorres’s 1928 performance for the home run record with 43, and 9 RBIs behind Tokorres’s 1928 RBI record, with a league-best 99. (9/18)
  • Redwood RF Ambroise Forestier goes 2 for 3 today to win the batting title with a .362 average to end the season. He’s had an RBI in 7 straight games to finish the year. He edges out Delle’s Antonio Teakowa by .020 points to deny him a Batting Triple Crown. (9/18)
  • White Sox right-handed starter Jorge Takato pitches 7 scoreless innings for his UA record 15th win of the season. Takato missed his previous start with a “dead” arm, but returns on the last day of the year to finish 1929 with his record streak of 14 straight victorious decisions intact. Takato also claims the UA’s first Pitching Triple Crown, finishing as the league leader in wins (15), strikeouts (154), and ERA (2.21). He is the obvious front-runner for UA Pitcher of the Year. (9/18)

Congratulations to this year’s division champs and wild card! The best-of-5 UA SemiFinal Series starts on Saturday in Tiny Sea.
