Weekly Report: August 26, 1929

History is made on both sides of the plate in a week with the first no-hitter and the first player to hit for the cycle in UA history…Andy Thompson returns to the Salvation lineup…The trade deadline looms next Wednesday, 8/28. What kind of last-minute moves will we see as teams competing for playoff spots look for the missing piece? There are still quite a few valuable free agents available, so teams looking for talent might go that route, now or a little later, instead of making any hastily implemented trades…

  • Northsouth brings some fresh arms to their roster, signing famed touring junk ball lefty Justin “Jocko” Morris to his first UA contract, along with SP Bruce Brown and 2 more pitchers as the Guardians brace for their final playoff push over the next 4 weeks. (8/19)
  • White Sox SP Jorge Takato wins his 10th straight decision, striking out 10 in just 6 innings, in Deerborn’s 4-3 win over Redwood. (8/19)
  • Stags CF Ramon Zuniga is 3 for 5 with 2 HR and 5 RBIs, bringing his HR total to 26. His teammate, Carlos Katamori, hits 2 HR of his own as the Stags beat the Rivals, 11-4. (8/19)
  • Brothers CF Howard Tenney hits 2 HR, Brothers SS Keith Franklin walks four times to tie the UA record in a 10-1 thumping of the Chargers. (8/19)
  • Brothers reliever Jesus Rojatas leaves the game today with an elbow strain. He will miss the rest of the regular season, and likely any potential playoff games for Salvation. (8/19)
  • White Sox C Franco Garcika hits 3 doubles, Mathew Huertata strikes out 11; the White Sox beat the Owls 4-3. The White Sox are now tied with the Guardians for the wildcard spot. (8/20)
  • Albert Pentana briefly ties Antonio Teakowa in the home run race with 28 as the Stags beat the Rivals in 11 innings, 7-6. Teakowa hits his 29th shortly thereafter to put himself back in the lead. (8/20)
  • Whit Vorpoole goes 7 scoreless innings with 8 Ks for Salvation as the Brothers hand the Chargers another beating, 7-1. (8/20)
  • The Guardians continue to sign new free agent pitchers, picking up former Bears starter Ronnie Delaporte yesterday, and relievers Julian Marquez and Francisco Ndale today. Northsouth is at the bottom of the league in batting average against and slugging against, so they’re clearly hoping to shore up their pitching staff ahead of their showdowns with Salvation, Deerborn, and Roland down the stretch. (8/21)
  • Antonio Teakowa is 3 for 3 with a double and his 30th home run. The Stars outlast the White Sox, 2-1. (8/21)
  • Miners 2B Jose Meza becomes the first player in UA history to hit for the cycle. He triples in the 1st, doubles in the 3rd, hits an RBI double in the 5th, a single in the 6th, and a 2-run HR in the 8th. The Miners stomp the Rivals, 13-5 on 21 hits. (8/21)
  • There was a scary moment in Taawa when Chargers slugger Nathan Crayton was hit in the face with a pitch. It was unclear whether he lost consciousness, as team doctors and trainers were quick to surround him when he went down in the batter’s box. He was helped off the field, noticeably shaky. He was taken to a hospital bed for overnight observation. The Guardians won the game, 7-4. (8/21)
  • Owls SP Will Shufflebottom throws a 3-hit shutout against the 1st-place Brothers. The Owls win 8-0. Shufflebottom’s celebration after the win draws the ire of Salvation manager Jim Cannon, who steps out onto the edge of the field to make his objections heard. Redwood manager Tyler Ross backs up his controversially outspoken pitcher in the post-game press conference, revealing that he reprimanded Cannon privately in the tunnel for his very public reprimand of Shufflebottom. (8/21)
  • Antonio Teakowa extends his HR race lead to 4 with his 31st and 32nd home runs of the year. His 32nd is a walk-off solo bomb in the bottom of the 12th to give the Stars a 6-5 win over the White Sox. (8/22)
  • Brothers CF Howard Tenney strains his achilles tendon while running the bases in Salvation’s 10-inning, 5-3 win over Redwood. He is listed as day-to-day, but the injury may have an effect on his output over the next few weeks. (8/22)
  • Railey 3B Gavin Jones heads to the IL with a strained elbow after leaving the game today against Lia Kompos in the 7th inning. He may miss up to 4 weeks. (8/22)
  • Platte sweeps Cherricaw for their 4th straight win, remaining on the bubble entering the final stretch. Bears C Juan Alfaro is ejected for arguing a strike call and is suspended by the league for 3 games. (8/23)
  • Jose Meza has another great day with a pair of home runs, but the Miners fall to the Rivals, 9-5. (8/23)
  • CF Ramon Zuniga goes 3 for 4 and hits his 27th HR. The Stags sweep Prissley for their 5th win in a row. They are the first team to 50 wins and now have a 5-game lead over Deerborn in the East. (8/23)
  • Peter Hernankez earns his 23rd save of the season in Northsouth’s 6-3 win in Taawa. He remains a perfect 23 for 23 in save opportunities this year. The Guardians sweep Taawa to extend their lead in the wildcard race to 2 games. (8/23)
  • Northsouth’s bullpen overhaul continues with another three relief pitcher signings today, including righty Ogg Moum, whom the Guardians released during spring training this year. (8/23)
  • Owls SP Desire Lemoine makes history, throwing the first no-hitter in UA history against the Guardians at Trefellen Field. He strikes out 7 and walks 6. The Owls won, 6-0. (8/24)
  • Stags SS Vage Lek puts on a rare power display with 2 HR and 5 RBIs in Roland’s 6-3 win at Platte. (8/24)
  • White Sox SP Jorge Takato strikes out 7 Miners in 8 innings and gets his 12th win of the season, breaking Stags pitcher Rich Smith’s record, set last year. Takato has won in 11 straight decisions. (8/24)
  • The Guardians add even more pitching, signing veteran free agent relievers LHP Augusto Lia Kweli and RHP Javier Lia Undun. (8/25)
  • Brothers superstar CF Andy Thompson returns to the lineup after missing nearly six weeks with a sprained knee. He hits a home run in his first game back and Salvation beats Delle, 7-4. However, Brothers CL Fernando Varkas is injured again with a strained hamstring. He could miss up to 3 weeks. (8/25)
  • Stags SP Rich Smith pitches 7 scoreless innings and strikes out 9 as Roland pounds the Bears, 10-1. The Stags have won 7 in a row and are currently the best team in baseball, having won 17 of their last 20 games. (8/25)
  • Mathew Huertata goes 8 innings for the White Sox in a 2-1 win over Lia Kompos. With the win, Deerborn again draws even with the Guardians in the wildcard race. They meet in Northsouth for 3 games starting this Saturday, August 31. (8/25)
