1929 All-Star Game

Stars Ballpark of Darling, Delle, Medland

The East and West All-Stars met in Delle last night in the 2nd annual UA All-Star Game in front of 27,479 loud baseball fans. It would be difficult to top last year’s action in Tiny Sea with its no-hit pitching performance by the West and political drama at the stadium, but baseball’s best came together again to entertain as only they know how. The pitchers dominated early, but in the 4th, Lia Kompos 3B Hichem Colle smacked a double for the West’s first hit to score Northsouth’s Cal Oluoch from second. In the bottom half of the inning, the East evened the score as Deerborn’s Rygh Ogg sent Roland’s Jose Lia Tinta home on a sacrifice groundout. From there, it was all East as the East Division went on to thump the West, 7-1. Salvation’s Mike Gurr had a tough 5th for the West, giving up 4 hits for 5 earned runs. Prissley’s Juan Tumaini hit a 2-run single and Roland’s Ramon Zuniga, the league’s home run leader, hit an appropriate 3-run blast to left field put the East firmly in command. Representing the hometown Delle Stars, Antonio Teakowa didn’t record a hit, but did find his way on base. Stars pitcher Gurr Gurr threw a no-hit 3rd inning, and Stars closer David Rogers closed out the win by striking out the side in the 9th.

Ramon Zuniga was named MVP for his 2-hit performance, including his 3-run bomb in the 5th.

The Home Run Challenge was cancelled this year due to a poor reception by the players in 1928. Players and coaches complained that the tournament’s timed format altered players’ swings and rushed their routines at the plate. Some fans may have missed it this year, but we may never see another All-Star home run competition. There are rumors that the league may suspend the All-Star game entirely in the future due to injury and wear concerns in the middle of a 100-game season. Some of have suggested moving the game to the fall, or simply naming the teams but not risking the players’ health with an actual exhibition on the field. For now, the UA’s 3rd annual All-Star game is on track to go ahead in 1930 at Sapfoot Stadium in Taawa, Kandelria.
