Weekly Report: July 8, 1929

The UA first-year player draft was held on Friday. The Herders chose 20 year-old infielder Hubert Riko from Green Rock, Thronson with their number one pick. Other notable first-rounders were 22 year-old outfielder Ronald Joyner for the Owls and 18 year-old phenom OF Jorge Aguilar for Lia Kompos.

  • Stags SP Edward Mercier comes out of today’s game against the Guardians with elbow pain. He is expected to miss just over a week. Northsouth 1B Cal Oluoch smacks 2 dingers, but the Stags win 5-4. The two early season playoff contenders play a rubber match tomorrow in Roland. (7/2)
  • Brothers 1B Curt Lawson leaves the yard twice, and Brothers CF Andy Thompson hits his 11th as Salvation beats Railey 8-4. (7/2)
  • Stars SS Gary Allaire twists his ankle severely in Delle’s 4-2 win over Platte. He may miss up to 7 weeks. (7/2)
  • Trail Blazers SP Jeff Rogers holds the White Sox scoreless through 7+ innings, but the bullpen squanders a 5-0 lead, with Prissley’s Ramon Oba blowing his 4th save this year. The White Sox win, 6-5, on Rygh Ogg’s walk-off single in the 9th. Deerborn sweeps Prissley in 3 games at home. (7/3)
  • Bears CF Stan Davis falls just a single short of the cycle with a double, triple and home run in the Bears’ 9-4 win over Delle. (7/3)
  • Stags CF Ramon Zuniga’s 12th HR is a 2-run walk-off to beat the Guardians in 11 innings. The Stags take 2 of 3 from the Guardians in a possible playoff preview. (7/3)
  • After a strong start to the season, the Cherricaw Herders lose their 5th in a row, 10-6, as the Miners sweep at home. (7/3)
  • Brothers CF Andy Thompson goes 4 for 5 with a double and 2 HR to claim the lead in the home run race with 13 HR this season. Salvation sweeps Railey on the road. They remain baseball’s hottest team. (7/3)
  • Chargers RF Gil Larcher reaggravates his recurring back injury in a collision at 2nd base. He may miss up to 3 weeks. Taawa loses to Delle, 5-2. (7/4)
  • Salvation SP Jon Robertson goes 7 scoreless innings with 7 Ks, Salvation 1B Curt Lawson hits his 11th HR, as the red-hot Brothers trounce Prissley 8-0. (7/4)
  • Herders RF Bill Randall ties the UA record with 7 RBIs as Cherricaw unloads on the Stags to end their skid, winning 17-7 in front of 20,727 fans at home. (7/5)
  • SP Ricardo Molina throws a 1-hit, 7 K, 8.1 inning gem for the Chargers. Carter Brown finishes off the 1-0 victory over the Stars for his 8th save. (7/5)
  • White Sox SP Jorge Tokato strikes out a team record 12 batters in a brilliant, 2 hit, scoreless, 8 inning performance. However, Garcika blows the save and Thery loses the game in the 10th as Gurr Gurr hits a 3-run walk-off HR for the Bears. (7/5)
  • Rivals SP Michael Mercer allows only 2 hits in 8.1 scoreless innings as Railey blanks Northsouth 4-0. (7/6)
  • Brothers SP Austin Edwards has another great start for Salvation, holding the Blazers scoreless in eight 3-hit innings. Fernando Varkas blows the save and leaves the game with an apparent shoulder injury in the 9th, but the Brothers go on to win on LF Howard Tenney’s walk-off 2-run HR off Ramon Oba. The Brothers earn their 2nd straight sweep and continue to dominate with a 25-9 record. (7/6)
  • White Sox LF Bob Hove hits a pair of home runs in Deerborn’s 6-5 win over the Chargers. (7/7)
  • Salvation Brothers win their 8th in a row, defeating Platte 8-7. They have the league’s best record at 26-9. (7/7)
  • Miners LF Jesus Lia Taawa goes 2 for 2 with 2 home runs in Lia Kompos’s 6-5 victory over the Stags. His 4 RBIs put him at the #1 spot for RBIs with 35 this year, surpassing Andy Thompson’s 31. (7/7)
  • Last year’s MVP, RF Ambroise Forestier of the Owls, returned to full-time action this week and was back in top form with 3 HR, 6 RBIs, and a .462 average in 29 plate appearances. (7/8)
