Spring Training has come to a close, and we look ahead to the start of “real” games this weekend. Teams will now finalize their 25-man squads and begin the regular season on Saturday. A few players have sustained unfortunate injuries, and the reigning champs look primed to defend the Windsor Cup. Here are the biggest stories from the last month out of Uplantic Association Spring Training in Amblint, Medland:
- Another storied pitcher from baseball’s waning touring era has joined the UA. 39-year-old SP Desire Fievet signs a 1-year deal with the Northsouth Guardians. (4/28)
- Junk ball hurler SP Craig Ogg adds even more firepower to a talented Prissley rotation; he signs a 1-year deal with the Trail Blazers. (5/5)
- Baseball fans everywhere were saddened to learn that legendary outfielder Jorge Akil will miss the season for the Owls after breaking a bone in his elbow. Akil was set to play in his first UA season after a show-stopping career touring with Milner’s Baseball Kings. (5/10)
- After prolonged drama over his UA signing, White Sox RP Francisco Katrikowa will miss the 1929 season with a torn elbow tendon. He threw just 8 pitches in his debut before having to leave the May 7 game against the Stars. (5/11)
- Rivals team leader LF Carlos Kayra will miss about 6 weeks with plantar fasciitis. (5/13)
- White Sox send CL Peter Hernankez to Northsouth in exchange for infield prospect Hunter Phillips. Hernankez joined the White Sox late last season from the Eastern Riders touring club. (5/13)
- The Salvation Brothers dominate the field in Spring Training. CF Andy Thompson hits for a .411 average and hits 10 HR during the spring to lead the Brothers to the preseason’s best record at 24-6. Spring games don’t count in the standings, and exist primarily for teams to evaluate and finalize their rosters. Still, Salvation’s command in Spring Training feels like a statement by the defending champs entering the 1929 regular season. (5/29)
